Massive NC rally on cards | `It will help NC to stage a comeback' | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Oct 23: The National Conference, according to informed sources is making preparations for a massive rally at Ganderbal to counter the on-going agitation. The rally shall be addressed by the Chief Minister, Omar Abdllah before Darbar moves to Jammu. The N C leadership wanted to hold the rally at Lal Chowk to convey a strong message to the separatists. However, the idea was abandoned for `security reasons'. Now the show will be held in Chief Minister's bastion, Ganderbal. According to the NC leadership expects around 7000 people at the venue. A hefty amount, sources said has been spent to make the rally a success. The senior workers have been urged to rope in people for the rally. Interestingly the intended rally will be the first of its kind since the past five months. Pertinent to mention, the members of pro-Indian organizations including the NC workers went into hiding soon after the June 11 when the on-going agitation gained momentum. The Chief Minister did make a public appearance last week in posh Jawahar Nagar after inaugurating a receiving station of the Power Development Department (PDD) but it went almost un-noticed. The need for a rally was felt after Chief Minister's controversial speech in the Legislative Assembly. The speech, NC workers believe, has done them a lot of good. Soon after the speech, the NC cadres started resurfacing. The speech won Omar sufficient goodwill. The NC, therefore, does not want to miss the opportunity of staging a comeback. The other reason for holding a rally in `difficult times' is to belie accusations of `governance deficit' and `trust deficit'. The deficit factor was widely discussed around Parliamentary delegation's visit to the conflict torn Valley last month. The deficit factor, sources said, gave sleepless nights to Omar. He (Omar) was urged by the Home Ministry to try to reach the people. And Last but not the least; Papa seems to have conceived the rally idea. Omar's speech caused a stir in whole of India. Papa had to rush from Delhi to do the damage. It was Papa who advised Omar not to issue controversial statements. |
