Terming Kashmir a “disputed” issue interlocutors land into controversy
10/23/2010 11:36:17 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 23: The recent statement of the newly appointed interlocutors on Kashmir that its agenda was for a comprehensive and political settlement of the Kashmir ``dispute'' has given rise to a fresh controversy with various mainstream political social and religious organizations out rightly rejecting the statement.
Though political parties including BJP and Panthers Party had already rejected the interlocutors saying that they have no role to play in resolving the prevailing crisis in the state, their (interlocutors) statement that their priority will be for a comprehensive and
political settlement of the Kashmir ``dispute'' has dragged them into a controversy.
Challenging the statement the leaders of various mainstream organizations in Jammu questioned the authenticity of the three interlocutors led by eminent journalist Dileep Padgoankar, noted academician Radha Kumar and former CIC member M M Ansari in terming the Kashmir a ``disputed'' issue.
It may be recalled that on October 19 after meeting the Home Minster, P Chaidmabaram in Union Capital Mr Padgoankar said ``the tight focus will be for seeking a political outcome so that we put this dispute well and truly behind us''.
The Kashmir is not a disputed issue and even during the Simla agreement of 1972 the leaders of India and Pakistan Governments used the word ``Kashmir issue'' and not dispute said Virneder Raina, national spokesman Panun Kashmir. While strongly condemning the statement and criticizing the role of interlocutors he said using the
word dispute for Kashmir is a serious matter and the Government of India which has appointed them should clarify its position as the statement has send a wrong signal in various quarters. The Kashmir is an integral part of India as the Maharajah of state has acceded to Indian Union after signing instrument of Accession on October 26, 1947 which was signed by Lord Mountbatten the then Governor General of India also. This agreement was then ratified by Constituent Assembly of the state dispelling all doubts about the
merger of the state with Indian Union, he added.
Terming Kashmir a dispute the interlocutors have detracted from the Government policy on Kashmir said Virender Kumar an RSS activist. " Using the word dispute with Kashmir is a serious issue as it is an integral part of India and the only dispute is over the PoK which has been forcibly occupied by Pakistan'' he added.
He said the interlocutors should clarify their position otherwise the nationalist people will be forced to protest against them. " We are not against the dialogue and listening to the problems of cross section of the people in Valley or other parts of the state, but this
does not mean that we will adopt appeasement measures for the separatists and anti-national elements in the Valley'', he added.
Even BJP, which has already rejected the interlocutors saying their appointment to settle the prevailing crisis in Kashmir will prove a futile exercise has also taken a strong exception to their statement. A party spokesman said the interlocutors have given this statement on behest of UPA Government at Centre led by Congress. He accused the
Congress of double standards and its appeasement policies responsible
for entire mess in the state.
Expressing his surprise over the statement VHP state president Dr Rama Kant Dubey said the interlocutors have no role to play in Kashmir which is a law and order problem. Terming the statement as unfortunate he said some pseudo secular forces in the country are trying to give a twist to Kashmir issue to win over the separatists and anti-social
elements without knowing that they are harming the national cause. He said before the VHP comes to streets to protest against the role of interlocutors, they should clarify the statement.
Anil Parihar senior leader Panthers Party has also criticized the statement of interlocutors saying that this has not been the principled stand of the Government of India on Kashmir which has merged with Indian Union through a process of law. The interlocutors
who have been appointed to look into the causes of present turmoil have harmed the national cause by terming Kashmir a disputed issue, he added.
