Gujjars demand separate Pir-Panchal region | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 24: Demanding a separate Pir-Panchal Region and a tribal hill council in Jammu and Kashmir , Gujjar-Bakarwal community members today pleaded with the interlocutors to make strong recommendations in support of their issues and concerns to the centre. This was stated by a delegation of intellectual of tribal Gujjar-Bakarwal community led by Dr. Javaid Rahi to Daleep Padgaonkar. Members of the community pressed hard for granting social, cultural, economic and political empowerment to the community residing in far-flung and difficult areas of the state. Delegation apprised the team that since they possess different identity, ideology and culture, they should be given separate region on the patron of Leh and Kargil Hill Development Council so that their tribal uniqueness could be protected and preserved. Delegation pressed the team for special recommendation in this regard and informed the team about other problems being faced by tribal Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir. A six page memorandum was also submitted to the team seeking their help through recommendations in implementation and strengthening of Schedule tribe status in the state by giving them the much awaited "Political Reservation" in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Community also demanded that union government should conduct a special census for the nomadic and shelterless Gujjars and Bakerwals of Jammu and Kashmir who are presently under seasonal migration along with their livestock to upper reaches of Northwestern Himalaya. Organization also demanded a special census survey of Gujjars with a correct enumeration of their tribe under "Shelter less category" in the course house listing which began on Saturday. |
