Tug-of-war between Govt. and Geelani continues in Kashmir
10/24/2010 9:39:52 PM
While some call it a tussle between the Government, headed by Omar Abdullah, and the separatists, led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani,in the Kashmir valley during the last over four months, others call it a tug-of-war between the two sides.Whatever name one wishes to give to the growing conflict between the separatists and the Government one is not ready to believe that peace in Kashmir is round the corner. In the tug-of-war between the Government and the separatists a piquant situation has developed in the valley. It is complete curfew restrictions in Kashmir today. It is curfew restrictions in three out of 10 districts in the valley the next days.It is total shutdown in Kashmir in response to the call given by Syed Ali Shah Geelani today.Life is normal in the valley the next day to be abnormal on the third day.The tension is there even though none has died in police firing. It is march to Hazratbal today. It is march to Palhalan the next day.It is march to
Hyderpora, where Geelani lives, the next day and on the third day it is the call for march to Jamia Masjid. One should try to differentiate between the call for march to Hazratbal or to other places by Geelani and the Dandi march organised by Gandhiji in 1930.While Geelani's march is aimed at inciting people to violence which could pave the way for a third-party mediation on Kashmir,Gandhiji's Dandi march was essentially a nonviolent movement aimed at building peoples' awareness of their rights and duties. Whatever else Geelani's calender on shutdown and protest rallies indicates one thing seems to be clear that the separatists have been instrumental in massive losses to people in the valley.Losses to traders, transporters, hoteliers and others connected with the sector of tourism and industry. No doubt after a large number of people pleaded that the calender on shutdowns and strikes keep the sector of education untouched there has been some improvement in
the academic activities in the valley after a large number of educational institutions opened their doors. It seems that Geelani has yet to understand the ramifications of violence, shutdowns and protest rallies. He needs to be told that since 1990,when the militancy related violence robbed the scenic valley of its natural panoramic view, there has been a heavy brain drain from Kashmir. One cannot count on finger tips the number of doct ors, engineers and other technocrats who left the valley to serve in other Indian states,in the Gulf and in other foreign countries.A stage had reached when the valley had no top physician, surgeon and other technocrats left for serving people.Gradual improvement in the situation had eencourageed these doctors, engineers and others to return to Kashmir but the fluid security and political situation since June 11 last may trigger fresh brain drain.Besides this Geelani needs to be told that most of the rich business houses in
Kashmir set up their alternate establishments in various Indian states where they have registered record earnings during the last 20 years. And this very segment of the Kashmir society has sent their children to educational institutions and professional colleges outside the valley.During the last 20 years a large number of muslim youths, engineers, company secretaries, business management experts and others have been doing well while serving in the Government and private
sector in different Indian states. If the separatists want immediatee settlement of the Kashmir issue have they ever bothered to come forward with one or a couple of solutions. If one set of separatists demand Kashmir's incorporation with Pakistan it is as impracticable as that of the demand for grant of azadi. One cannot expect to settle a long pending dispute when one approaches the negotiatting table with a fixed notion thereby showing no flexibility.Atleast the separatists are expected to demonstrate political maturity which they seem to lack because on one occasion they want the issue be settled between Islamabad and New Delhi and on other occasions they are for triangular talks for resolving the dispute. These separatists know one thing. So long there is political fluidity in Kashmir they(separatists) will have a chance to survive.
