Non adherence to the traffic rules resulting to the increasing graph of road mishaps
KHUSHWANT S RANIAL10/24/2010 9:40:35 PM
Barely an hour goes unreported through the vigil media reporting about the road accidents day in
and day out. The situation has gone beyond the reparable measures as the increasing trend is not in the favour of the state and society. Our ill attitude of putting blame on the one another is solely not going to yield any positive results in holding the increasing flow of the accidental deaths , severe and fatal injuries or the permanent amputation of the limbs forever. One’s heart bleeds seeing the sites of the accidents irrespective of the place and time .The victims family suffers a lot an irreparable loss and remains in the state of the coma , shock for the months together .In some cases ,the only bread earner when meets such a fatal unexpected end to his this tragic fate, the entire group associated to him/her in different capacities suffers a big blow upon his loss and it takes a huge time to overcome the grief. In certain cases the loss lands the bereaved family to the poverty stricken state. Traffic mishaps have become a core headache issue for all those agencies who are there to control the obility ,regulation and streamlining the traffic on the roads owing to the fact that entire liability is thrown upon them for such type of occurrences whereas it is baseless and totally not true in reality.
Traffic system is based on three essentials basic ingredients and these are 3-E’s i.e, .Education,
Engineering and Enforcement .It is their inter cooperation that helps to sustain the pressure building on the roads due to ever mounting increase of the vehicles and road users .But unfortunately it is not so and even apparently seems so as well under the given conditions and appearing situations. With the result ,one can find jamming , congestion, total chaos and outnumbered hit and run cases very frequent here and there .Over greed to meet the growth and development of the other developed nations by ours developing nation has caused us dearly in the manpower loss through such type of accidental cases .As per statically data available ,road mishaps takes the toll to 1.3 million people in India alone leaving out the 50 million injured on one side. Under the existing pace of increasing population, the toll and list of the injured ones can still go on the higher side in the near future as well .Analytical study supports that majority of those falling victim to the accidental cases are in between the age group of 15 to 35 years and all this is due to the rash and negligently driven vehicles in high speed .Too add to the woe are those unfortunate ones who fail to get proper medic care facilities within first 24 hours of the accident due to varying reasons like failing to get proper first aid ,late arrival in the hospitals due to the large distances and sometimes non availability of the hospital staff equipped with the adequate amount of desired infrastructure and medicines etc.
The causes of the accidents could be classified into three main categories depending upon
the nature of the cases like poor enforcement of the law ,unhealthy and unsound engineering aspect and above all unawareness about the use and application of traffic norms due to lack of
education .Firstly those type of accidents which does take place due to the poor engineering are
rough weathered road conditions having huge pitfalls and unplugged holes which especially during the rainy season become a cause of the havoc, roads having no dividers or parapets along their banks , no pedestrians paths or sideways for the slow moving cyclists or rickshaws ,small rotaries and roundabouts ,less number of the speed breakers in the crowded cities to curb the high speed of the fast moving the vehicles,Lack of road signs ,markings like yellow lines and zebra crossings ,poor traffic electronic light systems ,Less number of the overhead bridges, underpasses or the subways at the highly crowded spaces and T-junctions or 4-way crossings results in the ambiguity over the right of the way .Secondly those who become victim to road mishaps are due to the educational factor are those one who do not adhere to the traffic rules and float the traffic norms at their sweet will taking the law of the land for granted to be in their pocket and highly misuse the democratic freedom. These include those who ply the vehicle in zigzag manner in the high speed, taking the ride a source of entertainment and not the necessity of the day today’s life .They sharply turn the vehicles in high speed at the culverts ,bends and crossings without the use of the indicators or the horns etc .Poor driving skills to negotiate the curves have heavily caused the losses to many families .Use of mobile phones and driving the vehicles under the influence of the liquor have become a fashion now a days and this trend has equally led to the addition of the fatal accidents. Non use of the seat belts in the cars and crash helmets by the two wheelers have too compounded the issue badly. Furthermore non use of the sidelights, overtaking of the vehicles from the wrong sides without use of any idiosyncratic signalling ,headlights, misaligned high beams or sidelights etc. has also become the cause of outnumbered accidents on the roads. Heavy overloading of the vehicles beyond capacity and driven by the drivers of aged and blurred vision has tremendously caused the loss because the ageing does not support the whole body system to bear the brunt of the physical ,mental pressure. Above all the poor managed distance between the two driven vehicles on the road have many times caused accidents on the instant applying of the breaks due to the free for all straying animals on the roads .Mirror signal manoeuvre is totally unheard and rarely pressed into use by the drivers.
And above, all third main factor behind unabated rise in the accidental growth rate is the lackadaisical enforcement of the traffic department .Their flexible adoption in the enforcement of the stringent rules is one among the main factors followed by the poor challan rate which hardly affects the pockets of the violators. Until the heavy fine is imposed which may pinch the pocket of the concerned violator ,small and petty directions will bear no fruitful results in bringing awareness among the general public to observe the rule of the law. The traffic cops generally contend that too much political pressure is mounted upon them by the politicians and this excessive interference makes mockery of their working putting their efforts seek no healthy results. In addition to this ,over hectic schedule with barest amount of the facilities puts them in deep fatigued state causing their working too suffer a lot and they fail to deliver to best of their potential .Also ,lack of electronic gadgets ,wireless communication sets , poor transportation system ,and vehicles lifting machines likecranes etc. ,speedometer guns to check over speeding vehicles have also hindered their working resulting into road mishaps very frequently before their eyes and they have to see things helplessly as they too remain expose to the same vulnerable threat.
Remember laws are made to apprise every one about their rights, responsibilities and duties
and to cherish the taste of the freedom and not to encroach upon the domain of the fellow citizens. The democratic set up affords everyone to live in peace ,strive for the progress but not at the cost of curtailing the liberty of the others .Hence it becomes the moral duty of all of us to introspect at our own and do those things which do not affect the others and allow everyone to enjoy the privileges of the democratic secular set up by respecting every one rights .We all should be friendly road user offering space and accommodation to others to drive the vehicle in such a manner which may curtail the rate of avoidable accidents. Apart the concerned agency which empowers the applicant to seek driving license should made provisions difficult enough for the seeker prior gaining it so that the seeker may gain and hone driving skills for ever and remain agile and overcautious in observing the motor vehicle rules. And above all the government must press into service the traffic lights system at the most important junctions as it is too much to expect from the normal human being to check the over bubbling traffic flow manually .Last but not the least ,Public has to respond to the call of the demanding time to behave in more disciplined way on the roads otherwise chaos will never be checked at all.
