Time for Jammu to fight for the dignity of Jammu-based policemen
8 Height of discrimination

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 23: What has the Omar Abdullah-led government done to demonstrate its commitment to communalism and to establish that it could go to any extent to communalize even the police department, a very important tool of the government. It would be only appropriate to refer here to that reported government order that proves beyond any shadow of doubt that the present dispensation is highly communal and discriminatory and that its action is outrageous, insulting and humiliating. Such an exercise has become imperative to expose the present dispensation and its policies that have the potential of causing resentment among the Jammu-based belt forces.
The number of the Government Order is: "AIS (W) Comm - 15-2010-43802-06." The Inspector General of Police Headquarters has reportedly signed this letter. It was under the separate "terms of relief" prescribed by this Government Order that relief was given to the families of the police martyrs belonging to Kashmir region and Jammu and Kathua districts on the occasion of the Police Commemoration Day (PCD) October 21, 2010.
According to a report, no less than 100 colour television sets were made available to the police department in Kashmir for distribution among the family members of the Kashmir-based policemen who sacrificed their lives for the cause of the state and while fighting against the terrorists. What about the Jammu and Kathua-based police martyrs? The report quoting the government order, among other things, says, "100 colour TV sets have been arranged for distribution among the next of kin of Kashmir-based police martyrs already identified by Commandant IRP 10th battalion) on the occasion of the 12th blankets out of 200 available with the Armed Police Headquarters (APH) shall be provided to Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, for distribution among the next of kin of police martyrs of Jammu zone on the said occasion…Out of 21 pressure cookers available with Police Control Room, Srinagar, will be made available to SSP Kathua for distribution among the next of kin of police martyrs of Kathua district."
The content as contained in the said government order is self-explanatory. There is no need to reflect on the implications of this order. Where are those who assert day in and day out that the Omar Abdullah-led government is not Valley-centric? Where are those who shamelessly assert everyday and everywhere that the Omar Abdullah-led government believes in equitable development of all the three regions of the state? Where are those who consistently claim that the Omar Abdullah-led government is fair and impartial and that it doesn't discriminate between regions and that it treats all the people of the state inhabiting different regions of the state equally and with a sense to dispense justice to all? Where are those who always sing the monotonous and irritating song that the Omar Abdullah-led government is secular and that it doesn't discriminate between man and man on the grounds of religion and region? Where are those who shower praises on the Omar Abdullah-led government and say that it is for the first time that the state has a Chief Minister who is progressive, democrat and secular and that he is one who has done wonders in terms of harmonizing inter-regional relations and establishing communal harmony in the state?
The henchmen of the Chief Minister and anti-Jammu elements are very much there, but they would continue to shower praises on the Omar Abdullah-led highly controversial and communal government; they would never ever acknowledge the fact that the present government has broken all the records and charted for itself a path that would ultimately balkanize the state. They would never ever admit that the present dispensation has stooped so low that it has devised different kind of rules for the Kashmiri-based police martyrs and the Jammu-based police martyrs.
That the state government would differentiate between the Kashmir and Jammu-based police martyrs no one had ever imagined. But it has actually happened. Discrimination is glaring, manifest and provocative and the reason behind the discrimination with the families of the Jammu-based police martyrs is the Omar Abdullah-led government's out and out communal approach. It is time for everyone in the state in general and Jammu province in particular to stand solidly behind the Jammu-based policemen and officers and persuade the discriminatory Omar Abdullah-led government not to cause disaffection among the policemen.
The Jammu-based Congress ministers in particular need to fight for the cause of the families of the Jammu-based police martyrs because they are part of the government, as also because such discriminatory policies, apparently based on communal considerations, are not good for the Congress party in the Jammu province, its core constituency in the state, besides, Ladakh where it has swept the polls winning no less than 21 seats out of a total of 26 elected seats in the Leh Autonomous Hill Development Council, with the BJP getting four seats and independent candidate one, thus establishing that the people of Ladakh stand for the mainstream parties, and not for the parties like the NC and the PDP, which only preach secession and promote communalism in the state.
All other Jammu-based political parties and groups, besides social and cultural organizations, should also exert pressure on the Omar Abdullah-led government so that it treats all the families of the martyred policemen equally. It is the duty of everyone, who is a well-wisher of the state and who believes in the principle of justice and equity, to play his/her role so that everyone gets what hr/she deserves and so that everyone feels that he/she belongs to the state.
