Karan Singh snubs Omar Abdullah, says accession final & Kashmir just one factor | | | RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 24: The other was that Kashmir doesn't represent the entire State of J&K. What he said was that the state consists of three distinct regions, Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh and no regions could be ignored or bypassed while working out a policy aimed at ending unrest in Kashmir. In this regard, he said, " if the youth in Kashmir are angry in their hearts, then the youth of Jammu too are not happy. They are also angry, as they too are facing the problem of unemployment. The only difference is that there in Kashmir the youth are pelting stones, but here in Jammu the youth are not resorting to such tactics. Why this fact is being ignored…Jammu is very contented and patient." Karan Singh also said, "the people of Jammu should not allow the disintegration of the region (read Jammu) at any cost. Ekk gull yaad rakhni hai je Jammu subey di ekta te vaihbudi gi koi nuksaan nai hon dena…You will have to guard against any such attempts by sticking to your position." What he said in regard to Jammu province was very, very significant. He obviously hinted at those who have been seeking to disintegrate the Jammu province by raking up such demands at the behest of the vested interests in Kashmir or protagonists of Greater Kashmir as setting up of two autonomous development councils, one each for the non-existent Pir Panjal region and the so-called Chenab Valley region. He did stop there. He went on to say, " The Ladakhis are ignored…In any dialogue or solution, all the three regions of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh should get equal treatment. "Jammu and Ladakh cannot be ignored in any decision or dialogue. Without their involvement no headway can be made on any issue… Representatives from Jammu region should project aspirations of the people and their voice strongly heard at any for a," Dr Karan Singh, in fact, said. Dr Karan Singh was perhaps the first senior Congress leader who said what needed to be said at a time when the anti-forces are putting pressure on New Delhi in order to obtain concessions leading up to the virtual separation of J&K from India; at a time when non-Kashmiri sympathizers and supporters, including Maoists and Khalistanis, of Kashmiri separatists have upped their ante and swung solidly behind Syed Ali Shah Geelani and other Kashmiri separatists. He has taken the lead and talked of holistic approach. He has taken the lead in 2008 as well when the people of Jammu were on the roads protesting against the communal policies of the then state government. He had even demanded recall of Governor N N Vohra. However, to say all this is not to mean that Dr Karan Singh did all that he should have done to nail the Chief Minister and others of his ilk who have been trying their level best to create in the state an environment that helps separatists like Geelani achieve their sinister designs and promote their regressive and fundamentally communal agenda. He should have denounced what the unruly elements have been doing in Kashmir, but he didn't. He should have also told people and media persons that the Indian Independence Act of 1947 only talked of division of British India into India and Pakistan and accession of the princely states to either of the dominions, India and Pakistan, through the Instrument of Accession and that this British legislation nowhere talked of merger or this or that. By not explaining this constitutional aspect, he did leave the people of Jammu somewhat guessing. Besides, he did not explain the nature and social composition of the ongoing secessionist movement in Kashmir. It was imperative on his part. Had he done so, he would have served the cause well. Dr Karan Singh also did not do any justice to the Jammu youth by equating the so-called unemployment problem in Kashmir with the unemployment problem in Jammu. It is the Jammu youth that have been denied of their legitimate due share in the employment sector. Dr Karan Singh should know that the rate of unemployment in Jammu region is over 69 per cent, as against less than 30 per cent in Kashmir. Anyway, the former Sadar-e-Riyasat of J&K would do well to educate the public opinion in New Delhi, the Central Government and Members of Parliament. He can do that. (Concluded) |
