Srinagar-Leh highway reopens
10/25/2010 10:51:41 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Oct 25: Traffic on the 434-km-long Srinagar- Leh national highway resumed after remaining closed for three days due to snowfall and slippery road.
A traffic police official said this morning that the highway, linking the Ladakh region with the rest of the state, was put through last evening following improvement in the weather conditions.
However, he said, only vehicles stranded on both sides of the Zojila were allowed to move towards their destinations.
The road was reopened only after the BEACON authorities declared it safe for journey as frozen surface had melted after improvement in the weather condition.
The road had become very slippery due to minus temperature following snowfall from Sonamarg to Meenamarg.
The highway from Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia,to Leh was through.
The centre and state governments have already approved construction of a tunnel at Zojila to make it an all weather road.
BEACON authorities have announced closure of the highway for six winter months from October 30.
