Is Director Agriculture CM's PRO?
Baramulla Kissan rally
10/25/2010 10:55:08 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Oct 25: As if the Department of Information was not enough to mislead the public by feeding lies that the Directorate of Agriculture has started projecting a rosy picture of the situation in Kashmir through paid advertisements in local dailies.
The full page advertisement that appeared in most of the local dailies shows Omar Abdullah speaking to farmers in Baramulla district. According to the advertisement the gathering was the biggest ever Kissan rally held in Baramulla. This is `digestable'. By the advertisement claims that 30,000 farmers attended the rally which besides the Chief Minister was addressed by Ghulam Hasan Mir, Taj Mohi-ud-Din, Javed Ahmad Dar Aijaz Ahmad Khan and others. This claim forces one to raise his brows and rightly so.
The advertisement has used a `doctored' photo. It shows the first seven or eight rows of he participants. Had 30,000 farmers attended the rally as per the claims of the advertisement, the government would have used a bigger photo to prove its claims.
For the information of the Director Agriculture Baramulla is a sensitive place and holding a big rally at this point of time is simply impossible. The claim is belied by the fact that National Conference workers were given tough moments at Bandipora today. People including a big number of women pelted stones at them and chased them away from the town. The police had to open fire to restore order. Four persons sustained injuries in the police firing. Bandipora, it may be mentioned, was considered a peaceful place. It witnessed massive polling in 2008 Assembly elections. Baramulla on the other hand is hot since January this year. In fact the first phase of the agitation started from here.
The people are angry and have expressed their anger time and again. The angry people heckled the Chief Minister and his advisor Mubarak Gul when they visited Srinagar hospitals to enquire about the welfare of the injured. There is no denying the fact that the NC workers heaved a sigh of relief following Omar Abdullah's controversial speech in the Legislative Assembly recently. However, the NC workers admit that the speech has not emboldened them to the extent of attending a public rally in large numbers.
Why is Director Agriculture, therefore, feeding lies to the public? It seems the Chief Minister is not happy with Khawaja Renzu. Is it a pointer that Director Agriculture may replace Khawaja Renzu as Director Information in the coming days? He will prove a better PRO than Renzu by the way!
