Centre has no plan to alter present political arrangement in J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu,October 26:- For the time being the Congress high command has postponed its plan of evolving a better political arrangement in Jammu and Kashmir than what is in existence in the state at present. Party sources said that despite the repeated off the cuff remarks of Omar Abdullah on various political and constitutional issues the central Government seemed to be satisfied with the improvement in the situation in Kashmir valley.
Sources said that when the valley was in the grip of severe turmoil, the outcome of violence triggered by protesters, in which 111 youths were killed in police firing since June 11, the centre had started thinking of finding a suitable alternative to Omar Abdullah who was then believed to have failed in civilian strife and violence. However, during the last over fortnight there has been no killing despite shutdowns and protest rallies, for which the calls are being given by the separatists, and the centre believes that gradually Omar Abdullah had started maintaining a grip on the security and political situation in the state. What seems to have encouraged the Congress high command to defer its plan of changing the current political arrangement is the way Chief Minister has been able to move around and address peoples' conferences, including the one Kisan mela in north Kashmir. However, senior leaders of the state unit of the Congress, even while supporting alliance with the National Conference, have conveyed their displeasure to the party high command over the way Omar Abdullah has started ignoring and sidelining the congress in framing important policies. These leaders said that since the centre in general and the External Affairs Minister, S.M.Krishna and the union Home Minister, P. Chidambaram, supported Omar Abdullah on his views the state's accession with India, which had set the river Tawi in Jammu on fire, the Chief Minister has started adopting a big brother attitude towards the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir. Reports said that the mood in the National Conference camp is upbeat after its leaders came to know that the centre had decided to keep the present political arrangement in tact and had given a free hand to Omar Abdullah for dealing with the situation he deemed it fit. A senior Congress leader said "we are ready to cooperate with the National Conference provided Omar Abdullah sought our cooperation." He said that the National Conference leadership should know it that its options were limited when for the Congress there were many options. He said that the congress is favour of keeping the present political arrangement alive but it should not be done at the cost of the Congress.
