SKUAST-J organizes farmers’ field day

JAMMU, Oct 26:Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) organised a day long ‘Farmers’ Field Day’ at its main campus Chatha. Farmers’ field days was organized to motivate the farmers of the Jammu to adopt the scientific technologies developed by the University.
More than 500 farmers from all the districts of the Jammu region attended the field day. The field day was inaugurated by Dr B Mishra, Vice Chancellor of SKUAST-J.
The Vice Chancellor valued the hard work of the farmers because of which the food-grain deficient India has become self-reliant and food-grain exporter.
Dr Mishra apprised the farmers that in all almost all the crops and all related commodities like milk, meat, egg etc. India ranks first or second.
An interactive session was organized in which farmers highlighted the constraints faced by them in farming. The farmers also highlighted the damage caused to rice crops due to hailstorm on October 22. The farmers appreciated the role of the University and its KVKs in developing and disseminating the technologies namely development of crop varieties, round the year mushroom cultivation and other technologies. Farmers visited the research farm of the University. It aimed to convince farmers about the applicability of these technologies in the farmers’ fields by showing the performance of scientific agriculture at the University research farm. In the research farm, the farmers had first hand experience of the research trials of high yielding rice varieties, hybrid maize varieties, the farm implements, seed processing plant and green house (protected crop) technologies. An Agri-exhibition was also organized at the University museum, where the farmer-compatible technologies developed by the University, were displayed. Farmers attending the field day interacted with the scientists at the Agri-exhibition stalls and at the research farm.
