Progressive intellectuals in Kashmir also term accession as final, question role of interlocutors | | | ASHWANI EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 26: Not only the political parties, social and religious organizations in Jammu region had expressed their apprehensions over the role and appointment of interlocutors on Kashmir but a section of progressive intellectuals, writers and poets from Valley have termed their appointment an exercise in futility. ``We don't know what was the fun of appointing the interlocutors on Kashmir by Centre which is a settled issue so for as signing of instrument of accession by the then Maharja of J&K State and then Governor General of India Lord Montbatton is concerned'', said Ghulam Rasool a social scientist from the Valley. Mr Rasool, who is associated with culture for last 50 years made a dig at those who challenge the accession after 63 years of independence. The accession was ratified by the Constituent Assembly and sealed by the then Prime Minister of State, Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah and State Assembly, he added. Mr Rasool while accusing the separatists of blackmailing the India and exploiting the people of Kashmir for their vested interests said Geelani, Abdul Razak, Saif-ud-Din Qari and Ghulam Nabi were the four MLAs of Jamat in State Assembly during the seventies and they all took oath on the name of Indian Constitution and state Constitution at that time. So how are they challenging the accession at present, he asked? Making a strong dig at Arundati Roy and Co, he said on what ground she is advocating independence of Kashmir which is an integral part of the country. She must go through the history and read the instrument of accession first before making any statement to spread the ill will among the Kashmiris against India. What the interlocutors could achieve when the separatists totally rejected them and refused to meet them, said Ghulam Ahmed a social activist from South Kashmir district of Anantnag. By meeting some groups of students or stone pelters they can't solve the problem as they (interlocutors) don't know to which party these students belong, he added. There are some groups of students who are affiliated to ruling NC and Congress while others are linked to PDP and Hurriyat Conference, he said. How can these students take a decision without consulting their political bosses, he asked? Mr Ahmed said it ought would have been better if Government takes a tough action against the anti national elements and the Hurriyat had received a lot of setback after the arrest of Masrat Alam and the situation could become normal after the Darbar move by and by. For finding a solution to present crisis in Valley the interlocutors were supposed to meet the cross section of people there instead of selected men. There is a sizable number of population of Gujjars, Bakerwals and paharis in Kashmir and they have never been with Azadi or separatists, said Ghulam Hassan a trade unionist. After meting the Home Minister in Union Capital they (interlocutors) came to Kashmir and started meeting the people. They should have followed a proper procedure and invited the political activists, social groups, trade unionists, intellectuals, writers, poets and representatives of other ethnic groups to seek their opinion on the issue instead of terming Kashmir is ``disputed'' and creating more confusion among the masses. How they (interlocutors) term Kashmir disputed when elections to state Assembly and Parliament were held in umpteen times and in which over 60 percent people voted every time, he asked? He also took the Central Government to task for its changing stand on Kashmir as such a stand will further aggravate the problem. |
