Too much of freedom being used against country: Farooq
10/26/2010 11:00:28 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
New Delhi, Oct 26: While media continues to debate and discuss , some analyzing in support and others deeming appropriate to question what ARundhati Roy has said, the sources in home department in J&K today said the transcript of the speech delivered on October 25 a seminar ‘Wither Kashmir: Freedom or enslavement’ organised by Coalition of Civil Societies (CCS) has been handed over to the legal department for examining it.
If the legal opinion favours registering a case against the Booker prize winner, the state police would register the same, the sources said.
“Kashmir has never been an integral part of India. It is an historical fact. Even the Indian Government has accepted this” Roy alleged adding further that New Delhi became “colonizing power” soon after its independence from British rule.
This is not the first time that the writer has run into rough weather over her speeches. Earlier, her pro-Naxal write up and speeches had forced Chhattisgarh police to seriously think of booking her for waging war against the country.
.Roy has even gone to the extent of critcising the ‘reaction’ this time, her one more controversial quote being…. “Pity the nation that has to silence its writers for speaking their minds. Pity the nation that needs to jail those who ask for justice, while communal killers, mass murderers, corporate scamsters, looters, rapists, and those who prey on the poorest of the poor, roam free.”
Meanwhile, amid a furore over remarks by Arundhati Roy on Jammu and Kashmir, Union minister and former Chief Minister of state Farooq Abdullah today said there was “too much of freedom” in India that was being used by some to destroy the country.
“There is too much of freedom in India that some Indians themselves taking advantage of this and destroying the country. There are no limits to the way they are using this freedom,” the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir told reporters here when asked about the recent controversial speech of Roy on the state’s accession to India.
Asked if people such as Roy were exploiting the freedom of speech, the Union minister for New and Renewable Energy said, “The country has given the freedom, it is up to them how they use this freedom. It is for them to realise what is right and what is wrong. What to say and what not to say is for a person to decide.”
While participating in a seminar recently, Roy had said, “Kashmir has never been an integral part of India. It is an historical fact. Even the Indian government has accepted this”.She had also alleged that India had become a “colonising power” soon after its independence from British rule.
Terming the remarks made by Hurriyat hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani and writer Arundhati Roy at a seminar here as “most unfortunate”, Law Minister M Veerappa Moily today said freedom of speech cannot violate patriotic sentiments of the people.
“Yes, there is freedom of speech...It can’t violate the patriotic sentiments of the people,” he said here.
While terming their remarks as “most unfortunate”, the Law Minister said in India there are people who support one view or the other since the time of Ramayana.
On BJP’s allegations that government remained silent on the developments, he said, “Politics cannot be mixed with statements which border sedition.”
Asked whether his ministry had received a request from the Home Ministry seeking its legal opinion on whether the two can be booked for sedition, the Law Minister said, “I was away for three days...I have not seen the file so far”.
