Basmati growers can export their produce: Minister | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Oct 28: State Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir said today that the Basmati rice farmers will now be able to export their produce both outside the state and in the international market, after the revision of standards by the commerce ministry. New standards for the export quality of Basmati has been fixed at 6.61 mm length and 3.5 mm width against the earlier stipulated standards of minimum length of 7 mm by the ministry, Mir told reporters here today. Mir said the locally-grown Basmati-370 and Ranbir Basmati are slightly smaller in length but these varieties, however, possess all other parameters and attributes of Basmati rice as described by the ministry and other international organisations. The minister said that the matter was taken up with the central government by the state and as a result of sustained efforts, the commerce ministry changed the standards for export of rice. He added this breakthrough will make Basmati cultivation more profitable and go a long way in increasing the area, production and quality of Basmati rice in different areas of Jammu region. In order to promote Basmati cultivation and give a boost to the income of Basmati growers, Mir said that the state agriculture department is also preparing a project report for promotion of indigenous Basmati rice in collaborations with other concerned departments. Irrigation facilities and post-harvest management and marketing network shall also be strengthened under the project, he said.
