Women demand equivalent treatment | Issue of RBA certificates | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 28: Strange is the way of state government in dealing with the males and females of the state. The discrimination against the females is still high. There are different parameters in providing Rural and Backward Area (RBA) certificates to females being issued by social welfare department of the state. State government made a rule in year 2006 that no RBA certificate would be issued to those who married from non RBA area to a person belongs to RBA area. As per the notification published by state government that when a non RBA female married to RBA area, she will get certificate only after completion of 15 years and before this time duration, no certificate will be issued to women. Some prominent citizens from backward area also opposed this order of the government time and again and said that due to this decision of state government the women folk of state are discriminated lot. Question arises that what is logic of formulating this norm as women married to a person of RBA area will be bereft of benefits of RBA certificate. It is pertinent to mention here that state government is creating hurdles in the way of females from non-backward areas to marrying a person belonging to backward area. A social activist of a backward area Kathar of tehsil Akhnoor Kewal Sharma said that such a decision of government has falsified its claims regarding empowerment of women. He further said that this decision is not only discriminative but gender biased as well as various organizations in the state are up in arms against the move. Opposing this policy of the state government, President of Socialist Democratic Party (SDP) Dr Draksha Andrabi said that decision makers, who formulated the rules for people, were without vision and it was also seen here that whatever rules are made by the government, are always against the interest of the common masses. She further said that the government always behaves in a partisan way in relation to the women of the state. Minister for Social Welfare Department, Sakina Itoo said that the government was not bound to change its rules and policies, if few people are opposing it. She, however, said that she would definitely study the law to check loopholes in it. Only after that she would be in position to explain anything.
