EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 28: A strong protest was today held against Member of Parliament (MP) Lal Singh by PDD employees and locals at Basohli in Kathua after he asked police to arrest an incharge junior engineer (JE) over allegations of "corruption".
The demonstrators raised slogans against the MP and Basohli police and also blocked the Basohli road to vehicular traffic. The problem erupted when, during a meeting of the MP at Basohli, one Shama Begum, wife of Mohammad Rafi of Bari Nagrota, alleged that
incharge JE Darmesh had taken Rs 4,000 from her against power tarrif without giving her the government receipt.
Without going into the details of the allegation, the MP "ordered" police to arrest Darmesh and put him behind the bars. The incharge JE, who was also present in the meeting, told the MP that he would tonsure his head and was ready to face any action if
it was proved that he had taken money from her.
When he asked the woman if she knew him, she replied in the negative.Darmesh was, however, whisked away by police to the Basohli police station.
As the news spread, it made locals and other PDD employees angry. Raising anti-Lal Singh and anti-police slogans, they blocked the main Basohli road. Later, they held a dharna in the office of sub-divisional magistrate, Basohli, demanding unconditional release of the incharge JE.
Police sources said the MP also left the Basohli town soon after the protests against him.
Tempers, however, cooled down and people returned homes after Darmesh was released by police.
