Rajouri Teachers using students as 'bonded labour' | MS Sawari kids seen cutting grass during school timings, CEO assure enquiry | | EARLY TIMES REPORT RAJOURI, Oct 28 : If you are sending your kids in government school for getting education, you are mistaken. It is also wrong to think that the he or she is getting knowledge as your child may one among those who are being used like 'bonded labour'. They are made to do various works ranging from cutting of grass to bringing water for by them during school timings. If sources in Kotranka area of district Rajouri are to be believed, there are various government schools where students are being used for cutting of grass during the time they should be in their classrooms. This has been seen so particularly during this part of the year. Sources said that the students are being used just like bonded labour by the teachers. "Many students in uniform are being seen cutting grass in Kotranka and Budhal area during school timings and these students are used every year in this season for cutting of grass", sources said. Giving a particular example, sources said that 22 students of Class 6th to 8th of Middle School Sawari Number 1 were found cutting grass in nearby the area along with the school cook. Sources said that a teacher of the school had managed this "labour" for the cook of the school. "It surprised us that atleast 22 students of Middle School Sawari Number 1 were cutting grass of a cook in the area in School timings", a resident of Sawari on the condition of anonymity alleged. He added that the students were deported to the area at 11 am and they continued their work till 3:30 PM. "We came to know that these students were given lunch from Mid Day meal quota of the school", sources said. When contacted some students of the school admitted that on the direction of a teacher, they had gone to attend 'duty' of cutting grass of our Cook. "Yes we cut grass of Cook on last Monday and there is nothing new in it as we follow the practice every year", a student alleged requesting not to disclose his name. "If we will open our mouth, we will be kicked out from the school", he added requesting repeatedly not to disclose him. This is not the only school where students are being used for private work by the school staff, sources said that there is tradition in Kotranka and Budhal area to depute students for cutting of grass during this season. "So many school children are being deputed on this duty during school timings by the teachers", sources said adding that although the locals complained several times to the higher ups regarding the same, no action is being taken against the staff. "We send our children in government schools for education but they are being treated as labours", a Mohammad Din a resident of Kotranka said demanding high level probe in it. Sources said that teachers in these areas are also using students for transporting water to them in the school. "Where there is no peon, students are being used as peon by the teachers", sources said adding that this is human rights violation and action must be taken against these teachers. When contacted, Chief Education Officer Rajouri Gurucharan Singh said that he will enquire from the concerned Zonal Educational Officers and if some teachers will found engaging students in some work, action will be taken against them.
