National symposium on “Microbial Diversity and Bio-prospecting” begins in JU

Jammu, Oct 29: The two day North Zone meet of the Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology (ISMPP) and a National Symposium on “Microbial Diversity and Bio-prospecting” being organized by the Department of Botany, University of Jammu, was inaugurated in the Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium here today.
On the occasion, Prof. S.M.Paul Khurana, Director, Amity Institute of Biotechnology and former Vice-Chancellor of Rani Durgavati Vishvavidyalaya, Jabalpur was the chief guest while Prof. Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu presided over the function.
In his presidential remarks, Varun Sahni, lauded the efforts of the Department of Botany for organizing the meet in a well planned and creative manner. He explained the relevance of the theme of Symposium in the present age when whole globe is observing the Year 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity.
Sahni further informed the gathering that the microbes occupy all living and nonliving niches on earth including arctic, antarctic, and alpine regions, deserts, deep rock sediments, marine environments, and even thermal vents.
However, up till now less than 1% of bacterial and between 6-7% of fungal species is currently known, suggesting that millions of microbial species remain to be discovered, he added
In his keynote lecture, Prof. S.M.Paul Khurana, the chief guest, lucidly gave an overview of the microbial diversity and highlighted their inseparable association with the humans. He further emphasized over the challenges to the application of microbial technology and proposed that they need to be explored at length for the benefit of mankind.
During the inaugural function an abstract volume containing abstracts of the contributed research papers was also formally released.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Prof. Geeta Sumbali, convener of the Meet.
The technical sessions of the National Symposium begin in the afternoon with the lecture of eminent research scientist Prof. B.L.Puttoo who delivered a talk on “Development of Mycology and Plant Pathology in Jammu and Kashmir.” Later, Prof. B.N.Chakrabarty from Siliguri spoke on “Search for agriculturally important microorganisms from North Bengal and their diversity analysis”.
Dr. R.K.Arora from C.P.R.S. Jalandhar presented his lecture. In the technical session-2, the prominent speakers were Prof. H.N.Gour from Udaipur, Prof. I.M.Sharma from Solan, Prof. Usha Chakraborty from Siliguri and Prof. V.Verma from S.M.V.D.U. Katra.
In the evening a colourful variety cultural programme ‘Mycomehfil’ was organized in the honour of the participating delegates.
Prof. H.N.Gour, chief editor, ISMPP newsletter and Prof. B.N.Chakraborty, vice-president, ISMPP, were among the distinguish guests.
Dr. Yash Pal Sharma, organizing secretary of the North Zone Meet and the symposium extended the warm-hearted welcome to the dignitaries, guests and the delegates.
Prof. Anima Langer, head, Department of Botany thanked the society for providing the opportunity to host the prestigious meet here in the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
