FCI, state govt in nexus with millers | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, OCT 30: Food Corporation of India, (FCI) and state government are in nexus with millers and traders as a result of which the poor farmers are made to suffer every year. This was alleged by BJP MLA from Marh Constituency Ch. Sukhnandan while addressing a press conference here at Jammu. Sukhnandan said that the Union government has fixed Rs 1030 and Rs 1000 as Maximum Support Price for Ratna Paddy and China variety respectively. ``It is only an eye-wash as there is no procurement centre in Jammu province and farmers are left with no option but to sell their produce at Rs 800 to 850 per qtls. to the millers and private traders,’’ he said. He said how the FCI is in nexus with the millers and private traders was clear from the fact that five procurement centres have been opened in Akhnoor, Supwal, Khandwal, Pargwal and Palli Morh under an official order dt. October 12, 2010 but on the ground not even a single such centre exists in these areas and are being shown running on papers only. The indifferent attitude towards farmers and millers friendly policy of the Union government can be well judged from the fact that for the last 20 years the FCI has not procured any crop produce through cooperatives societies, a practice which was closed two decades ago. He also criticised the state and centre government agencies for not making available fertilizers and seeds as a result of which also the farmer has to suffer. For the current rabi season, the DAP required is 7000 metric tonne, urea 11000 metric tonne and MOP 500 metric tonne for Jammu district only but the government has released till date 4800 metric tonne of DAP, whereas quantity of Urea is nil till October 30. He said that the farmers have purchased high breed of seed of Ratna at the rate of Rs. 250 per kg and there is no procurement centre to buy their produce. The MLA warned the government to take effective steps to open procurement centres for the farmers within two days, failing which he himself alongwith thousands of farmers will come on roads against the FCI and the state government. Two prominent farmers Harjeet Singh and Balbir Singh were also present .
