Efforts afoot to equip police for meeting new challenges in J&K
10/30/2010 9:55:34 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Oct 30: Senior functionaries in the security and intelligence agencies have suggested to the state Government and the concerned authorities to introduce a scheme under which several companies of police and paramilitary personnel, deployed in Jammu and Kashmir, were given training in anti-insurgency operations with the Indian Army.

Official sources said that measures were being taken for improving and increasing synergy of Army, police and paramilitary operations in the troubled state which could have a positive impact on the internal security. Sources said that efforts were afoot to handover major insurgency operations to the police and men of the paramilitary forces so that the role of the Army was confined to guarding the borders.
Sources said that the state government had approached the centre for assistance in modernising and in gearing up police and the par amilitary forces for countering the growing internal security threats in Jammu and Kashmir where agencies across the LOC were trying to push groups of militants, equipped with sophisticated weapons, into Jammu and Kashmir for escalating the level of violence. In this connection, several intelligence agencies have been asked to coordinate their efforts on intelligence gathering which could be shared with the security agencies so that timely measures are taken to foil plans of the militants.
In addition, several government and security agencies have been asked to carry out regular review of the security scenario and prepare a blueprint on the requirements of the forces that was needed for meeting fresh challenges.
These agencies have been asked to keep a watch on those political elements who were trying to provide shelter to militants and assist them in carving out new hideouts and bases in the state. Reports said that the central Government has agreed in principle to sanction raising of another five additional police battalions so that in the near future the strength of the troops and paramilitary forces was reduced and the police were in a position to handle the entire law and order problem.
