Mega healthy athletes for spl children today

JAMMU, Oct 30: State Chapter of Special Olympics Bharat is organising a mega healthy athletes-Special Smiles Programme for Special Children/persons with Intellectual Disabilities under Internationally Oral Health Programme ‘Special Smiles’ at Future Pack Higher Secondary, Gadigarh, Jammu tomorrow .
This was informed by Dr Ashwani Gojra, state president Special Olympics Bharat Jammu and Kashmir in a press conference here today.
Gojra informed that Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture shall inaugurate the programme while Dr Santosh Ravindran National Clinical Director for Healthy Athlete-Special Smiles Programme, Mumbai along with his team of dentists from the state shall examine 300 intellectually disabled and 100 coaches for their oral health under the banner of Special Olympics Bharat J&K in coordination with Anupam Das Gupta, National coordinator, Healthy Athletes Programme.
Giving details of Special Olympus, he said that it was an international non profit organization dedicated for empowering individuals with the intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition. “It offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities year round training and competition in 30 Olympics type summer and winter sports”, he informed, adding, “The Special Olympic Healthy athletes initiative includes Fit Feet, Fun fitness, healthy hearing, health promotion, opening eyes, med fest and special smiles”.
Dr Santosh Ravindran National Clinical Director for Healthy Athlete-Special Smiles Programme, Mumbai said that for the millions of people worldwide with intellectual and developmental disabilities, dental care was often not a top priority and takes a back seat to more pressing medical issues but since its inception way back in 1993.
Mahesh Kinth, area director/secretary said that every athlete knew that excellence in sports depends on good health and this programme works to ensure that every athlete has the best possible chance for a truly healthy sports experience and makes achieving excellence more likely for intellectual disabled.
