Curfew imposed in parts of North Kashmir
10/31/2010 11:11:18 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Oct 31: Most parts of north Kashmir today remained under curfew as the restrictions were extended to parts of Kupwara district even as normal life in the rest of the Valley was disrupted due to a strike called by the hardline Hurriyat Conference.
Curfew was imposed in Delina and Palahalan towns of Baramulla district, Bandipora district town and three towns of Kupwara district in the wee hours, a police spokesman said.
The restrictions were clamped following reports that some persons were planning to create law and order problems, he said, adding, the restrictions were eased in Trehgam, Kralopora and Kupwara towns after 8.00 am.
Bandipora has witnessed clashes between protesters and security forces after a shopkeeper was arrested by police recently.
Although there were no restrictions elsewhere in the Valley, normal life remained affected due to the strike announced by Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
Shops, business establishments and private offices remained closed in most parts of the Valley.
Public transport services also remained off the roads but private vehicles were plying in the city in large numbers.
Kashmir Valley has been in a grip of protests, strikes and curfew since June when a 17-year-old boy was killed by a tear smoke shell allegedly fired by police at Rajouri Kadal area of the city.
