Awareness on crop insurance scheme for farmers soon: Mir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu,Oct 31: Keeping in view the massive damage to the crops due to floods, rain, hailstorm and drought, the Department of Agriculture has decided to launch a massive campaign for motivating farmers for accepting the crop insurance scheme which was introduced on an experimental basis since 2007. Meanwhile, the Minister for Agriculture,G.H.Mir, has directed the men of his department, especially the field officers, to launch an awareness programme in the entire rural belt of the state so that farmers accepted the scheme. He said that the crop insurance scheme had been launched on an experimental basis in some areas in the state. He added that response shown by farmers in R.S.Pura area, known as state's bowl for producing quality basmati, has been quite good as compared to other areas. The minister said that the national agricultural insurance scheme has been introduced in the state but during the last three years the response from the farmers to the scheme has not been as encouraging as it was expected. Replying to a question, the Minister said that after the report of the extent of damage to the crops, owing to weather related problems, was received then only the state Government would seek central assistance for providing some relief to the farmers whose crops had been affected. Under the national calamity scheme those farmers whose crops were damaged to the extent of 50 per cent and above were entitled to compensation. Mir said that in case of insurance cover even minor damage to the crops could be compensated.
