300 special persons checked for oral ailments

JAMMU, Oct 31: The State Chapter of Special Olympics Bharat today held a Mega Healthy Athlete – Special Smiles Programme for special children and persons at Future Pack Hr. Sec. School, Gadigarh Upper (Near Airport), Satwari.
Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture, Sham Lal Sharma, inaugurated the programme. Member Legislative Assembly T R Wazir was also present on the occasion.
Dr. Santosh Ravindran, National Clinical Director for Healthy Athlete – Special Smiles Programme, Mumbai along with a team of dentists from the state examined 300 Intellectually Disabled - Special Athletes and 100 coaches for their oral health under the banner of Special Olympics Bharat – J & K in co-ordination with Anupam Das Gupta, National Co-ordinator Healthy Athletes Programme.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that the by holding such camp, the Special Olympics Bharat has proved how sincerely it was working for the special people which are an important part of the human society.
Sham assured full help from the government and said that the NGOs are doing yeoman’s job by reaching out to the people who need special care.
Earlier, in his welcome address the State President Dr. Ashvini Jojra said that the Special Olympics is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to empowerment of individuals with Intellectual Disabilities. He said the organization works for making such people physically fit, productive and enable them to become respected members of the society.
Dr. Santosh Ravindran National Clinical Director for Healthy Athlete – Special Smiles Programme, Mumbai also deliberated on the developmental disabilities.
Meanwhile, the Minister visited Medicinal plants Garden at Bhohar camp and inspected the development and cultivation of various species of plants. He also interacted with the technical staff and inquired about the progress made at the garden.
