One trooper killed, two others killed in shootout
11/2/2006 10:47:56 PM

Srinagar , Nov 02 : Suspected militants today shot dead one Border Security Force trooper and injured two others at Regal Chowk in Lal Chowk area of Srinagar. The inured troopers were rushed to hospital in where the condition of one of them is stated to be critical.
Police said that suspected militants shot at a party of 143 Battalion of BSF from close range at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday and killed one BSF constable besides critically injuring two others.
The slain constable was identified as Mohammad Ashraf, a resident of Kerala in South India. Two others injured, identified as Raj Pal and Dheer Singh, were rushed to Srinagar's SMHS Hospital for treatment.
Soon after the shoot out whole Regal Chowk area was cordoned off and search operations began to nab any possible suspects. Troopers checked Identity cards and frisked passersby as shopkeepers downed their shutters fearing a backlash.
These close range shoot outs have lately become a trend and more than ten police constables were killed in these shootouts in recent months.
DIG Kashmir, Farooq Ahmad said that the trend countering such attacks needed innovation and extra caution and police had already geared up to counter these attacks.
"Over the past few months police too became the target of such attacks but change in our tactics has left forced militants to look for other targets," the DIG said adding "Today a BSF party became their target."
Border Security Force is not deployed anywhere in the city and the party that came under attack today had reportedly come for shopping. Though one of the troopers fired back at the assailants, suspected militants managed to escape, the DIG said.
