Hindus will be allowed to consume liquor | Secular-Democratic Geelani | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 31: Syed Ali Shah Geelani is a great man. He is a noble person. He doesn't believe in outraging sensitivities of the non-believers who cannot live without liquor. He doesn't believe in that Islam that prohibits consumption of liquor and that considers consumption of liquor an evil. Yes, he is an ardent champion of theocratic, feudalistic and dictatorial Pakistan, but it would be wrong to dismiss him as a communalist of communalists. It would be wrong because Geelani is "genuinely secular." Yes, accepted that Geelani is an ardent believer in what he describes as Nizam-e-Mustafa (Islamic rule), but how could we dub him as a communalist of communalists? We cannot dub him as a communalist because he is really secular and democratic. True that he doesn't like India and says "God would destroy India" because it doesn't subscribe to his views on Pakistan and theocracy, but he has all the respect for the non-believers in Jammu and Kashmir because in his heart of hearts he is very liberal, accommodating and compassionate. The non-believers must salute Geelani. He doesn't deserve contempt because he not a fanatic. He is only a freedom fighter. It is really disturbing to note that the non-believers in Jammu and Ladakh don't trust him. It appears they have miserably failed to understand Geelani, his concept of rule and his liberalism, secularism and democratic beliefs. He is not a bad person. He is only being misunderstood by the illiterate non-believers. The non-believers should trust him, join his secular anti-India crusade and help him establish what he wants to establish in the state. This would be in their interest. They would be the beneficiaries. Why should the non-believers join the Geelani-sponsored secular anti-India crusade? They should, without any exception, take the plunge and join the anti-India crusade unleashed by Geelani. Why because he has conceded their basic demand. What, according to the secular, democratic and forward-looking Geelani, is the basic demand of the non-believers, Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists included? Their basic demand is that under the system Geelani has been striving to establish in the state after achieving political emancipation from the "oppressive", "intolerant" and "backward-looking" India they should be permitted to consume liquor. "There should be no restriction on the consumption of liquor as far as the non-believers are concerned" is the fundamental demand of the non-believers and the great Geelani has conceded it. Several news papers have carried story to this effect. By conceding this fundamental demand of the non-believers Geelani has, undoubtedly, established his secular ad democratic credentials. Remember, only the other day Geelani made a solemn pledge that in case the non-believers join his anti-India crusade and help him achieve independence for the state, he would not bar the them from consuming liquor. His pledge was unambiguous. There was no confusion in whatever he said while holding out a categorical commitment that the non-believers would have unbridled freedom to consume as much liquor as they wish. What more they want? The non-believers in the state must abandon the path of confrontation and strengthen the hands of secular and liberal Geelani so that Jammu and Kashmir becomes independent of India and they are able to consume liquor freely in the independent state. What is all this non-sense? Geelani has, it seems, gone astray. Who has given him the license to abuse the non-believers? Where is the state government? Why is it not taking action against Geelani who is not only preaching secession but also ridiculing the non-believers by putting forth highly condemnable formulations like the non-believers will have full freedom to consume liquor? Geelani needed to be nailed and isolated. He has no right to cast aspersions on any community/communities. India is a democratic country. No one has the right to outrage the religious sensitivities of anyone. Geelani should remember that he is the most hated person even in Kashmir. The manner in which hundreds of posters appeared in the hub of commercial activities, Lal Chowk, and Residence Road, Srinagar, yesterday asking him to review his decision on continuing protest shutdowns indefinitely indicates that the days of his leadership are only numbered. These posters were nothing but a manifestation of the common Kashmiri Muslims' anger against him and the kind of dangerous and communal politics he has been indulging in, with the frightened, chicken-hearted and controversial administration watching his provocative activities as a mute spectator. |
