| Now psychiatric councelling session of Jawans | | | Jammu, November 2 : Worried over the recent incidents of killings of army jawans and senior officersby fellow colleagues, director General Medical Services Lt-Gen LP Sadhotra said on Thursday that army top brass has decided to undertake special sessions of psychiatric counseling of jawans in their respective units to identify those suffering from stress related disorders.Talking to media men here in Jammu at the Military hospital,Lt-Gen. Sadhotra said that jawans are not suffering from occupational stress.They are trained to withstand work stress. He pointed out that ,”indepth analysis had revealed that 0.3 per cent fratricidal cases were operational stress related and the rest 99.7 per cent were the result of domestic factors." He said that in the domestic factors property disputes,matrimonial discord and other factors were on the top. He said there was need for the civil administration to cooperate with the Army authorities.Explaining this he said that there were a large number of soldiers who had been bogged by property disputes and matrimonial discords and here the civil administration need to play its important role and expedite the decision on the property dispute cases.He said, because soldiers cannot avail ofleave beyond a prescribed limit his complaint or pending matter shouldnot be prolonged for too long ." Replying to questions he said that as per the instructions of the chief of the Army staff more teams of counsellors would be sent to Jammu and Kashmir where they will carry out screening and diagnosis of each soldier in all the units and those having symptoms of initial stage of stress were to be given treatment in hospitals. Referring to spurt in fratricidal cases he said "it is a coincidence and hence no need to read a pattern in it." Gen. Sadhotra said that already instructions have gone to the field commanders that they should improve the man management skills and the process of interaction between the officers and the soldiers. In the last four years there have been 400 reported cases of suicides and 12 cases of fratricidal killings rocked the Indian army since last year. It may be mentioned that on October 21 when three soldiers were killed in Narian in Rajouri district of Jammu and later on October 23 one soldier killed two jawans and later committed suicide in Budhal area in Rajouri district. Again, on October 27 a soldier committed suicide in Poonch in mysterious circumstances. The incident was followed by killing of one soldier and wounding another by an Army jawan in Udhampur. This was followed by the killing of an officer of the rank of Lt-Colonel in Srinagar on October 31.
