'Chinese intrusion' through fire crackers this Diwali | | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 1: Diwali come and go but the charm and demand of crackers associated with this grand festival remain as integral as ever with the general public even though the prices of fireworks have skyrocketed over the last few years. But, to counter the inflated prices of crackers the marketers of fireworks this time around have flooded the markets with Chinese crackers as the former are much cheaper than the Indian made sparklers. Most of the make shift fire cracker stalls put up at Parade Ground and Dusshera Ground Gandhi Nagar are stuffed with whole lot of varieties of Chinese made crackers which instantly have become a craze with the buyers. "The demand of Chinese crackers is more than the Indian made stuff because they are cheaper and have more variety. Chinese fireworks are a big hit among the customers." informed Suresh, a salesman in one of the counters at Parade Ground. Earlier the traders were selling crackers with the picture of imaginary pictures but for increasing the sale of their products and attracting the attention of customers, pictures of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan and some foreign models are displayed on wrappers and boxes used to package firecrackers. "Customers particularly children and youth have a liking to buy firecrackers displaying images of Bollywood actors. It adds to the saleable value of crackers," opines Sanju, a shopkeeper. Though almost all the stalls at Parade Ground and Dussehra Ground, Gandhi Nagar are experiencing brisk sale, the customers do not know how much decibel a particular crackers has. "All the crackers available in the market do not mention about the level of noise pollution. There is no information on the boxes of the crackers which can give an idea to a customer about the decibel strength of different fireworks….. Being unaware about the volume and level of pollution with its repercussions on the environment in general and to their health in particular, people are still purchasing crackers from the market to celebrate Diwali." says Anuj of Paloura.
