From accession row to talks with Salah-u-Din led PoK militants, Omar keeps 'pot' boiling | Good governance slogan waning in political clamour…..? | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 1: Stirring up a new controversy, it is none other than the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who is now asking to hold talks with militants based in POK under the leadership of Syed Salah-u-Din and Pakistan as party in general. Contending in a statement today that interlocutors appointed by the Centre had 'changed' discourse in J&K, Omar even stood by his remarks on Accession and reiterated these were based on history. True that Omar did not say this for the first time nor is his pro separatist political leaning something new. But the timing of his assertion on holding talks with POK militants led by UJC chief Salah-u-Din certainly makes a difference and matters from his earlier 'submissions' to Centre on almost similar lines. When Omar says interlocutors have changed the discourse of political scene of the state, he is quite right and conscious in the sense that whatever the latter uttered during their first visit to state few days back, Omar not only gave them a 'pat' and seconded them but the fact remains it perfectly matches with what he uttered and contended on the issue of accession. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's assertion today has suddenly become loud in the backdrop of the fact that the three interlocutors met leaders of various militant organizations in valley recently during which it is believed that latter have talked about holding talks with POK based militant outfits under the banner of UJC led by Salah-u-Din, besides involving Pakistan in the dialogue. The interlocutors may register this as a vital aspect in record of views of various shades of opinion, but the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah apparently appears to have picked up the thread from this step of interlocutors for more than one reason that suits him at this point of time. Omar has made a fresh call to reach out to POK militants for a 'meaningful' dialogue. It assumes significance the present situation in Kashmir which is still far from being normal. Things have certainly important but peace is still fragile . There is complete lull from the separatists as well, even as they continue to issue calendars for hartals. For the time being these are the utterances which are not only complimenting the scenario and public sentiment( recent unrest still live in their minds and memories) but also are being welcomed in the heart of hearts by the masses in general and separatists in particular. This is what actually separatists have been contending and asking for time to time in the recent five point agenda\formula forwarded by hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani. No matter speaking to militants in POK is a highly sensitive issue but Omar knows it well making assertions, will consolidate his constituency while remaining by the mainstream side. He is in no mood to repeat the 'mistakes' of past, the recent unrest having well made him understood the contours and dynamics of Kashmir politics where the simple slogans like good governance, development for progress etc etc are unworkable unless complimented by such political overtures suiting the public sentiment. This speaks why Omar as Chief Minister no more resorts to good governance rhetoric, even though it means a lot actually for the betterment of masses. But how long he can afford to cling to political posturing and to what extent will he intensify the tone remains to be seen. His posturing on the other hand is making New Delhi a bit uncomfortable and uneasy for they have to qualify and justify everytime Omar makes a new comment, stirring up a storm of kind.
