Udhampur jail inmates to brighten Diwali of Jammuites with colorful candles
11/2/2010 10:58:38 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
UDHAMPUR, Nov 2: This Diwali, for the first time, inmates of District jail Udhampur in Jammu province would be spreading message of love and brotherhood from behind the closed walls through the candles that they are making for public for brightening their worlds.
And the person behind this innovative idea is none other than the Jail Superintendent Rajni Sehgal who herself has a chequered career in prisons department. Sehgal successfully got the candles made at the Amphalla jail in Jammu where she was posted. She is now trying to spread same message of love, peace and brotherhood through the inmates of Udhampur jail who are making colorful candles here.

“When I got posted here some time back from Jammu jail, thought of replicating this successful candle making “Roshni” was in my mind and now the inmates of this Udhampur jail are making candles under a new inspiring theme “Parivartan”- the change which also means a change in their lives this Diwali,” says Rajni Sehgal adding that in Jammu, every year during Diwali, the convicts in the district jail of Jammu would make candles which are sold in the market under the name 'Roshni' which means light.
Candles are bought by people to light up their homes but to the convicts, candles have symbolic meaning. But this is for the first time that such thing is being done at Udhampur and entire jail including inmates, staff and superintendent are excited about it. “Candles are being manufactured inside the jail also with an attempt to make inmates self-dependent by imparting them soft skills so that after their release, they lead a normal life,” jail superintendent Rajni Sehgal said.
He added that Roshni is a ray of hope in the confines of this prison and ‘Parivartan’ is a change that can really transform their lives. Candles being manufactured are designer candles, floating candles and of many other types. Besides, the candles are in different colours, different sizes and shapes with stylish looks have been introduced to attract more customers.
For the first time inside district jail Udhampur, inmates are busy manufacturing huge stock of candles, which will be sold at cheaper rates during festival of lights. In one day, they are making around five to six thousand candles. Jail superintendent Sehgal informs that Udhampur district administration has authorized Jail authorities to display and sell their candles in the stalls in Subhash Stadium Udhampur for Diwali. Besides a mobile van of Jail would also be selling these candles in Udhampur.
Even in Jammu, these candles would be available in Satwari and Bakshi Nagar areas. “We have also sent the candles to Reasi”, informs the jail superintendent. Despite living in dark, the jail birds bring light in millions of homes through their candles which they sell under 'Roshni'.
