'Message centres' come under police scanner for sending enticing SMSes to subscribers | | | BHARAT BHUSHAN Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 2: Some 'message centres' have come under J&K police scanner for sending "enticing" SMSes to cellphone subscribers. These SMSes are designed to lure young people into joining "love clubs".All these SMSes attract public, especially youngsters, with the promise of pleasure."We are already aware of it," a senior police officer said and added, "We are planning to take legal action against the companies sending such SMSes as their act is punishable." "All these SMSes are highly enticing and sure to attract replies from young people," the officer said and added, "We feel these are traps and have the potential to spoil youth." He said police were contemplating to stop the flow of these short messages to J&K subscribers after cases of sexual exploitation of girls were reported in New Delhi. All these girls had made friends through internet. Though no such case had been reported in J&K so far, might be because people were unable to reply these SMSes due to a government ban on them, police planned to take preventive steps in this regard, the officer added. He said it was surprising that such 'message centres' had so far not attracted the attention of law enforcing agencies in the country.A youth said before the official ban on SMSes in the state, he had become a member of the "love club". "Soon after becoming a member, I had started receiving highly objectionable SMSes. This made me panicky and I changed the SIM to stop the flow of such SMSes for ever," he added. The officer said a strict action would be taken against the operators of these message centres if any case of exploitation of girls was reported in J&K. |
