11/3/2010 10:14:22 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 3: Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) MLA and its working chairman Harshdev Singh has urged state government to take up with union government issue of upgradation of GCET Jammu to the level of NIT on the pattern of Kashmir Engineering College which has been upgraded and accorded status of NIT.
He said that government had assured during last Budget Session to have the process initiated for the said purpose but regretfully no action had been taken in respect thereof. Singh further deplored that GCET had been neglected and deprived in several other aspects including creation of infrastructure, provision of necessary faculty, framing of rules, introduction of career advancement scheme, creation of promotional avenues and extension of the benefits of sixth pay commission.
Elaborating further, Harshdev Singh pointed out that GCET was established more than a decade back and it was most unfortunate and rather distressing to note that even the recruitment rules had not been framed till date. He said that in the absence of the recruitment rules, faculty and other staff of GCET were deprived of career advancement schemes and other promotional avenues.
Singh further castigated the government for extremely poor infrastructure facilities in the college. He said it was surprising to note that the practicals of the students in several courses were being conducted in private engineering colleges due to non availability of requisite lab and other facilities.
Singh further expressed concern over the poor faculty position as out of total sanctioned strength of 71 teaching faculty only 27 posts were filled up on regular basis. Giving details of the staff provided in the GCET as per Assembly reply provided to him, Singh said he was anguished to note that out of 14 professor, only 3 were in place.
Like wise, out of 24 Assistant Professors posts, only 8 were available and as against 33 lecturers posts only, 16 lecturers were posted in regular establishment. He said JKNPP would espouse the cause of GCET with the Task Force scheduled to visit the state along with other developmental related issues of Jammu region.
