Actions on ground belie J&K govt’s claims: Mufti | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 3: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said that expecting peace in Kashmir while government continued to evade real problems would be futile. In a statement issued here today, he said that expecting people to give peace a chance is a noble wish but unrealistic in view of uninterrupted use of draconian methods used by government. Kashmir, he said never failed to respond to the requirement of using peaceful methods for expressing its aspirations, but the state instead of reaching out created more and more tragedies through its actions. Mufti said that discourse on Kashmir has once again been turned on its head by focusing on abstracts and theories and evading action on the problems that face the people. No words would suffice where action is required, he remarked and said even the 8 action points set out by government itself only a month back have disappeared from discourse. It seems the government has gone back to its familiar mode of forgetting about Kashmir after it got off the news headlines, he added. He said good intentions have to be followed up with matching action and unless that was done it would only further fuel alienation, trust deficit and cynicism. Mufti said while the government itself had set an agenda of reviewing AFSPA, reduction of troops and release of prisoners only the reverse of these objectives was being followed. An entire generation of Kashmiri youth is sought to be branded as stone-pelters and hounded into the underground. Many people have run away from their homes fearing arrest, torture and extortion he said and observed “it seems arrests have been turned into an industry for the security forces and political brokers to benefit from”. Referring to the host of statements from government Mufti said these have created more confusion than clearing the way for any resolution of issues facing the people. While more and more people are being imprisoned instead of releasing them, the government has reportedly plans to establish more police stations in the rural areas. This he said speaks volumes about the inability to understand the sentiment the mishandling of which has brought the state to its worst phase of history. He said no strong arm methods have ever succeeded in defeating an idea and it is tragic that the government is refusing to learn from its blunders. Mufti said the self praise of the government about bringing down the casualty rate in recent weeks sounds dangerously cruel. He said that Kashmir can never forget the tyranny involved in shooting down 111 youngsters and asked “was this entire agitation driven by the demand to use pellet guns instead of bullets?” The government will have to provide actual relief to the common man and especially those affected directly by the crisis; he said and observed that lone could set the stage for a purposeful dialogue to resolve the issues involved. PDP patron said the repressive methods must yield room to proper governance which is a completely forgotten area.
