3 IMs among participating in 9-day meet
IGP declares open National U-19 Chess Tourney

JAMMU, Nov 03: Inspector General of Jammu and Kashmir Police (IGP) Traffic, Hemant Kumar Lohia today declared open the XXI National under-17 (boys and girls) Chess Championship at Heritage School in the outskirts of the city, here.
Guided by former state champion and president of the All J&K Chess Association, Atul Gupta, chief guest initiated first move on the chess board with chairperson of Heritage School, Sunita Gupta being his opponent.
Speaking to the gathering, the IGP termed the holding of event a new beginning in promotion of the game in this part of the country. He also appreciated the efforts of the State Association and the management of Heritage School for extending help to the organizers in their endeavor to host a national event.
In this first ever mainstream age group competition being organised in the state, three International Masters (IMs) are taking part. The organizers of the mega event, All J&K Chess Association shall be awarding a cash prize of Rs 1.25 lacs to winners at different level in the nine-day chess competition.
“Since we are hosting the event for the first time, a number of boys and girls have been given chance from the host state to them exposure and confidence of playing against top ranking opponents,” president of the Association, Atul Gupta told SAN.
In all, 37 girls and around 80 boys have entered themselves for the competition, to be held on league basis, in two sessions of morning and evening.
Among those higher ranked boys competing from J&K are Danish Pathania (1491) and Sanchit Gupta (1486). On the other hand, Akriti Kotwal and Aditi Sharma are prominent among girls from the home state.
“For the first time three IMs have come to the state to compete in the tournament. They are Srinanth (Tamil Nadu), Parasana Rao (Mumbai) and Debashish Das (Orissa) and playing against such higher ranked boys will certainly help participants from J&K to improve,” maintained Atul.
Earlier, Principal of the School, BN Sarkar welcomed the participants and other distinguished gathering while senior faculty member, Harbans Singh presented vote of thanks.
