332 end lives, 111 flee from police lockups in two decades | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 3: While 332 inmates have ended their lives in state's "high security" police lockups, 111 others have managed to flee from there in the past two decades. Apart from the poor security bandobast at police stations, their dilapidated condition was also responsible to some extent for the inmates' escape from there. Figures show that most of the inmates had fled from the police stations or police posts which did not have toilets. While cops took them outside, they had managed to give them a slip while attending, or pretending to attend the call of nature. Others, who found it hard to flee, or who could not bear the alleged police torture, ended their lives inside police lockups. In some police stations, inmates could be seen cleaning floors and doing other menial works. Some of them had fled at opportune moments. In August last year, Pak national Mohammad Zahid had fled from the Khour police station in Akhnoor. From the Satwari police station too, a foreigner had fled some time back. Top Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant Gazi had also fled from the police custody. On March 25, 2008, a Lashkar militant had fled from the Doda police station lockup. On March 16, 2001, a militant had fled from Parimpora police station in Kashmir. On October 13, 1999, five Pak nationals and an Afghanistani had made good their escape from the border Ramgarh police station after snatching the rifle of a guard. While fleeing, they had shot dead two cops. When contacted, a senior police officer said effective steps were being taken to stop the occurrence of such incidents in future. |
