Cement scam unearthed in sewerage deptt,influential contractor among 3 held | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 03: Unearthing a major cement scam in the sewerage and drainage department, police today arrested three persons, including an "influential" contractor. A total of 225 Ambuja cement bags were recovered by police in two raids at Nanak Nagar, police sources said. A junior engineer (JE), alleged to be involved in the cement embezzlement, was absconding. Raids were being conducted to apprehend him to, the sources added. The embezzlement came to the fore when acting on a tip-off, police raided a hardware shop at Nanak Nagar and seized 25 bags when these were being unloaded from a load carrier. Police seized the bags and the autoricksha, besides arresting load carrier driver Deepak, son of Gharu Ram of R S Pura, and shop owner Avtar Singh. A godown, owned by Avtar at Nanak Nagar, was also raided by police. From there, 200 bags were recovered. To avoid detection, Avtar allegedly used to fill this cement in ACC bags for retail sale.Sources said Avtar's interrogation led police to the arrest of contractor Amrish Sharma, son of Sham Lal Sharma of Gandhi Nagar. He was apprehended from his residence at Gandhi Nagar. The seized cement bags were alleged to have been sold by the contractor to Avtar in connivance with JE Rajinder Singh of Gandhi Nagar. SP (south) Rajeshwer Singh said efforts were being made to nab the absconding JE. A case under sections 409 and 411 of RPC stands registered against the accused at the Gandhi Nagar police station.
