Farmers protest, block Jammu -Poonch road at Bawe Talab for over two hours | Unmasking of FCI-millers nexus demanded | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 3: To register their protest against the anti farmers attitude of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and State Government hundreds of farmers form Marh and adjoining constituencies today blocked the Jammu-- Poonch road at Bawe Talab 15 kilometres from here for over two hours. The protesting farmers were led by BJP MLA from Marh Constituency, Ch. Sukhnandan. The protestors with banners in their hands squatted on the road and did not allow the traffic to move for over tow hours. All the pleas of the local police and revenue officers who persuaded the farmers to lift the road blockade failed to make any impact on them. The farmers were protesting against the shortage of fertilizers and failure of the FCI to set up the procurement Centres for purchasing the paddy and wheat form the farmers of the state. They were also demanding the compensation for the crop damaged in the hail -storm recently. Shouting slogans against the FCI authorities and State Government the farmers warned to intensify the agitation in case the Government continued to be a mute spectator towards their problems. Later on the assurance of Additional Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Sheetal Nanda and ASP Rural, Mohan Lal who assured that their problems will be redressed within two days the protesting farmers lifted the road blockade. However they warned to re-launch the agitation and come to streets in case the authorities fail to keep their word. The Additional Deputy Commissioner along with other revenue and Police officers reached the spot to persuade the farmers to lift the road blockade. Talking to reporters Ch. Sukhnandan accused both state Government and Food Corporation of India of playing with the farmers' interests. Though farmers are the backbone of national economy but in Jammu region they get a raw deal from the Government which has been the main cause of their present plight and miseries. Masking a scathing attack on the authorities Ch. Sukhnandan said that the FCI has failed to provide the minimum support price for the paddy and wheat to the farmers in J&K which was fixed by the Central Government forcing them to sell their produce to millers at throw away prices. He held the PCO-millers nexus responsible for the same and alleged that for years together the farmers in the state have been deprived of the support price. Ch Sukhnandan while demanding a probe in the matter said the guilty officers be punished under law. Raman Singh a farmer from border belt alleged that the people are being misled by the FCI of opening procurement centers in Jammu for paddy. Contradicting the claims of FCI which has said that five procurement centers have been set up in Akhnoor tehsil, he said they only exist in papers and not on ground. Terming it a big scandal he demanded a CBI probe into the matter and action against the guilty. Equally holding State Government responsible for the same, he said had it been responsive to farmers problems the FCI authorities would have never dared to play with their interests. The farmers especially in Jammu region have suffered a lot over the years due to the negative attitude of the State Government and FCI. There is a nexus going between the millers and FCI authorities for years together but the Government has failed to take the cognizance of the same despite many complaints made by the farmers, said Karan Singh another farmer from Marh block. He said the farmers have now lost the patience and they will not tolerate further exploitation by the State Government and FCI. In case the demands were not settled in stipulated time the farmers of the entire Jammu region would take to streets and launch a decisive struggle for their rights, he added. |
