8 killed, 42 hurt as bus plunges into Chenab
Traffic police ASI suspended

JAMMU, Nov 3: Tragedy this afternoon struck the hilly Doda district when a speeding bus skidded off the road and plunged into the mighty Chenab river near Prem Nagar, resulting in the death of eight persons, including a police headconstable, and injuries to 42 others.
The ill-fated bus (JK02P/7717) was on its way from Jammu to Kishtwar.It left the general bus stand here at about 6.30 am. However, when it reached Prem Nagar, few kilometres short of Kishtwar town, the driver lost control over the steering as a result of which it fell into Chenab.
A total of 43 persons, including the driver, were in ths bus. Out of them, seven were killed on the spot while one succumbed to injuries on way to the GMC Hospital here, police sources said.
Those, who died instantly, were identified as headconstable Surjeet Singh of Baramulla, bus driver Kuldeep Singh, son of Basant Singh of Janipura, Sobha Ram, son of Nath Ram of Atholi Paddar, Abdul Karim, on of Mohammad Abdullah of Thathri, Mohammad Sadiq, son of Ali Mohammad of Panshi, Rashida Begum, wife of Gandru of Kahara,
Thathri, and Abdul Kasim, son of Asadullah of Gandoh.
Five of the seriously injured were airlifted to GMC hospital. They were identified as Sunita Raina, wife of Ranjit Raina of Kishtwar, Fila, daughter of Mohammad Hussain, Shaista, daughter of Farooq Ahmad, Vishal, son of Rampal of Bohri and Pawan, son of Babu Ram of Paddar.
Sunita later succumbed to her injuries.Sources said after the bus fell into the river, the rescue operation was started by locals who were later joined by police. Senior police and civil officers had also rushed to the spot to supervise the rescue operation.
Though five of the injured were airlifted to the GMC hospital, others were admitted to the Doda district hospital.
Eleven of them were later referred to the GMC hospital by road. Some of them were identified as Tre Singh, son of Lal Chand of Paddar, Daleep Kumar, son of Chuni Lal of Kishtwar, Khadim Hussain, son of Mohammad Bashir of Nagrota, Gayetri Devi, wife of Ravinder Kumar of Kishtwar, Narboo, son of Baboo Ram, Amina Begum, wife of Farooq
Ahmed of Kishtwar, Sheetal, daughter of Ravinder Kumar of Kishtwar, Amina Banoo, daughter of Mohammad Hussain of Kishtwar, Dev Raj, son of Shankar Lal of Thathri, and Dolkar, son of Dhuni Cahnd of Thathri.
Sources said traffic police ASI Gulam Nabi was placed under suspoension for dereliction of duty.Overspeeding was stated to be the reason behind the incident.
