EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 4: Over the mysterious death of a woman, tension today gripped Toph Manasan in Falaien Mandal area of Satwari.
While the victim's parents alleged that she had been beaten to death by her husband, police said there was no visible fatal injury mark on the woman's body.
Police sources said over some alleged family dispute, Geeta Devi (33), wife of Babu Ram of Toph Manasan, consumed poison at her residence and ended her life.
Tension, however, gripped Toph Manasan after Geeta's parents and other family members arrived there, alleging that she had been beaten to death by her husband. They held a strong demonstration, alleging that Geeta was being tortured by Babu on one pretext, or the other since the time of her marriage with him.
Police, however, reached the spot before there could be a possible clash between the two sides and took the body in their custody, the sources added.
After completing legal formalities, police evacuated the body to the GMC hospital mortuary. On the demand of her parents, a Board of Doctors was specially constituted to conduct the post-mortem on her body.
After the post-mortem was over, the parents took took the body their home at Gho Manasan for last rites.
Police had launched inquest proceedings in the case under section 174 of CrPC.
The woman's parents alleged that she died after Babu last night beat her up with lathies. Torture became the reason of her death, and not the poison, they alleged.
Sources said police had detained Babu for questioning. The cause of death could be ascertained only after the post-mortem report was made available to police, the sources added.
