Jawan, PDD employee among 8 killed in road mishaps

JAMMU, Nov 06:
Eight persons, including an army jawan and a PDD daily wager, were killed in separate road accidents here Friday.Sepoy Satpal, who was posted at Pathankote in 8 JAK Li, was on way home at Ramgarh on his motorcycle to celebrate Deepawali with his
family members.
Police sources said he lost balance on a speed breaker at Diani near Samba and fell in the middle of the road, resulting in serious injuries to him.He was admitted to the Samba district hospital and later referred to the GMC hospital, Jammu, but he died on the way.
PDD daily wager Rakesh Singh, son of Bishambar Singh, was killed on the spot after a speeding tipper hit him at Ghagwal.
The driver fled the spot soon after the incident. Some people, however, caught hold of him and handed him over to police.Rakesh's body was kept in the hospital mortuary last night and post-mortem was conducted on it this morning.
Sources said while the family members were taking the body home, the word spread that the tipper driver had been released by police.This sparked off strong resentment among the family members, who then placed the body in the middle of the national highway at
Ghagwal and blocked it to vehicular traffic.
Additional deputy commissioner (ADC) R C Sharma later visited the spot and told the protesters that the driver was still in police custody.
He also told them that it was being verified if he was involved in the incident, or not.
The ADC also gave Rs 10,000 to the Rakesh's widow. After the tempers were cooled down by the ADC's statement, the people lifted the body and took it home for performing its last rites.
Jagjit Singh, son of Inder Singh of Gobindpur Chatha, was injured seriously on being hit by a speeding vehicle near his residence.He was evacuated by some people to the GMC hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Rakesh Kumar, son of Om Prakash of Bhalwal camp, was crushed to death by a speeding vehicle in the close vicinity of his village.
Sehdev Singh, son of Sardar Singh of Sidhra, Sukh Ram, son of Bua Dass of Bhagwati Nagar, Abhinav Kumar, son of Bishan Dass of Ramnagar, and Vishwakarma of Qasim Nagar were killed in other incidents on the city roads.Cases in this connection stand registered at the concerned police stations.
