Protest at Ramgarh after fire crackers' stalls burnt | | | JAMMU, Nov 06: An anti-Samba district administration protest was held at the main Ramgarh chowk Friday after 20 odd stalls of fire crackers were burnt to ashes in the absence of fire tenders. The municipal committee had given permission to people, mostly unemployed youth, to temporarily set up fire crackers' stalls at an open space in front of naib-tehsildar's office at Ramgarh. Though the the municipal committee had taken fee from the stall owners, it did not station fire tenders near the ground to meet any eventuality on the Deepawali day. As ill-luck would have it, a stall caught fire and the flames, that emanated from it, soon engulfed the adjoining stalls. Within no time, all the stalls were burnt to ashes. There was, however, no casualty as the people managed to flee to safety after the fire broke out. Asserting that the fire could have been stopped from spreading to other stalls had there been fire tenders, the stall owners and some locals held a demonstration at the main Ramgarh crossing, blocking it to vehicular traffic. While protesting, they raised slogans against the Samba district administration and the municipal committee. When additional deputy commissioner (ADC) R C Sharma visited the spot, the angry people told him that they would not lift their dharna till they got compensation as their stalls were burnt due to the non-availability of fire tenders near the venue. On ADC's assurance that he would take up their demand with the authorities concerned, the people got pacified and returned homes.
