| Leh driving tourists crazy but….. | | | Early Times Report
LEH, Nov 6: Leh is beautiful place for thousands of tourists who visit here every year in summer season.
Every year around thirty to forty thousands tourists visits Leh from May to September, 2010. Unfortunately, the same heaven has been turned into a harsh place to live in winter season. Temperature fall drastically after October and by November, the two main roads which connect the region with rest of the world get blocked due to heavy snowfall.
Zojila pass between Kargil and Srinagar remains closed for almost five months. Leh- Manali highway remains cut off for more than six months. During these five to six months in the winter season, people have to bear lots of difficulties. Apart from environmental harshness during winter, other facilities like water and electricity get severely affected.
In winter, people keep themselves warm by using LPG and Kerosene oil heaters. During winter, Air transport is the only medium through which people can travel outside the world. There are four airlines which give service in Leh but unfortunately here also, people of Leh are at the mercy of God as private airlines operate only when they find some handsome profit out it and in winter due to bad weather condition, one way booking them generally stop operation in winter season.
Most recently, Kingfisher airline has stopped their service in Leh and it was expected that they will resume their service only in summer season. Like wise, indigo airlines which earlier had service from Jammu from Leh has left people of Leh on the mercy of only single Indian airlines.
Without proper life sustaining infrastructure, proper water, electricity etc the life in Leh especially in winter season become very hard to live. Therefore, word 'LEH' derives two meaning, one for summer and one for winter. Word “Leh” in summer signifies “Life enjoy here” and in winter it signifies as ' Life End Here'.
