Is Congress or PDP hatching conspiracies against NC ?
11/7/2010 10:38:19 PM
When Farooq Abdullah recently alleged that conspiracies were being hatched against the National Conference majority of people and political activists believed that the threat to the ruling party was from the PDP.The reason being that tthe National Conference and the PDP are treated as sworn political foes. The leadership of the two organisations may be considered as Kashmir centric but there is nothing else which could bind the two parties together or bring the two sides on one platform or enable the two to form a coalition Government.Well in politics nothing remains static and examples regarding flexibility in combinations and permutations in politics can be multiplied. In Uttar Pradesh yesterday's political foes have joined hands for the formation of the Government today. It has happened in Punjab,Haryana,Bihar and elsewhere. But if one takes into account the history of the Congress and the BJP or that of the National Conference and the PDP one is
pessimistic about Congress-BJP alliance or National Confererence-PDP coalition. And if Farooq Abdullah has talked of conspiracies against the party he heads he may have Congress in his mind.Even senior PDP leaders are of the opinion that the NC has no threat from he party headed by Mehbooba Mufti. They say the PDP and the NC are two political foes but the PDP is no longer in a poion to hatch conspir acies against the National Conference. These PDP leaders believe, rightly or wrongly, that if any political party has the calibre and the capacity for hatching conspiracies against the National Conference it is only the Congress. And if the track record of the Congress is taken into account it has been found hatching conspiracies against the National Conference right from 1952 onwards. If in 1947-48 Sheikh Abdullah, who headed the National Conference, was able to gain power as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir it was the result of the Congress support
notwithstanding the fact that for the Congress there was no other alternative but to support the Sheikh who had emerged not only the tallest political figure in the state but a genuine representative of a majority section of people in Jammu and Kashmir also. The same Congress schemed against the Sheikh whose Government was dismissed and the Chief Minister arrested. After about 22 years it was ,interestinlgy, the same Congress that helped the Sheikh to regain power with the support of the Congress.Again the same Congress withdrew its support to the Government headed by Sheikh Abdullah in 1977 which led to the dissolution of the Assembly followed by fresh elections which saw the Sheikh reemerge as the undisputed leader after his organisation won a two-third majority in the Assembly poll.Soon after the demise of Sheikh Abdullah in September 1982 G.M.Shah,eldest son-in-law of the Sheikh, started getting ready to to take over as Chief
Minister of the State. It was timely intervention by the then Prime Minister,Indira Gandhi, that helped Farooq Abdullah to elbow out his brother-in-law to succeed Sheikh Abdullah as Chief Minister. And it was the same congress that manipulated the fall of the duly elected Government headed by Farooq Abdullah. One had thought that it was the end of the bonhomie between the Congress and the National Conference. But it was not the case as 1986 saw the rise of Farooq-Rajiv accord which resulted in NC-Congress coalition Government in 1987.The Congress has emerged as a kingmaker in Jammu and Kashmir after the birth of the PDP about 10 years ago.And as kingmaker the Congress chose to form a Government in alliance with the PDP and not with the NC in 2002 when the NC had won 27 seats in the Assembly against 17 by the PDP.So the choice is with the Congress. And with reports gaining ground that the rank and file in the state unit of the Congress is unhappy over the
style of functioning of the Nationl Conference the Congress has got a chance to decide whether to be with the NC or join hands with the PDP with which its has not burnt the bridges but the distance had widened between the two.The PDP would not mind grabbing the opportunity of supporting a congress led Government because that was the only way,at the present moment,to push the National Conference out of power. In the context of these events people are seen debating whether the Congress was really hatching conspiracies against the National Conference or not?
