Jammu , Nov 7: "Love is in the air, every where I look around Love is in the air, in every sight and every sound "----John Paul Young's 1978 hit lyrics got refreshed in the minds as Jammu dawned to an excitement and fervor of pure and pious tranquility of love and affection.
Sisters, adorning their attires best and brothers hurrying to reach them as soon as possible was a common sight on Jammu roads that presented a festive look of an occasion solemnized by Jammuites as Bhaiya Dooj.
Vermillion sported on foreheads and blessings bestowed from sisters for long life, brothers today held their esteems in highest spirits as the city of temples proved to its religious best to having preserved and cherished the ages old traditions of ethical relationships as the most revered ones by celebrating Bhaiya Dooj on most emphasizing note.
Streets , lanes and roads wore a decorative look with young and old alike rushing to their loved ones in brothers and sisters to greet and exchange pleasantries among themselves besides sharing the blessings of each other for the day being an occasion of Bhaiya Dooj-but sporting an equal importance to brothers and sisters both.
"Getting blessed from sister is a heavenly bliss," was a general feel among the brothers as strengthening the bonds of love and affection, sisters throughout the city applied vermilion on the forehead of their brothers.
The early morning excitement was for everyone to see. Little wonder, excited sisters, clad in their festive best, did not go to the university or colleges. They stayed back or drove to meet their brothers. The Inter State Bus Terminus and the railway station, too, were abuzz with activity as brothers reached there to receive their sisters. As city residents were on visiting spree, traffic at certain places almost came to a standstill.
Major traffic jams were witnessed in different parts of the city,
However, the celebrations were not all that simple. Sisters, instead of carrying the vermilion on simple platters, preferred to pick up traditional trays decked with glittering mirrors.
As they stood excited, brothers could be seen bending to touch their feet. Many went to temples to pray for the success and long lives of their brothers. Heavy rush was also witnessed in front of the sweet shops all over the city as the residents did last-minute shopping.
Some of the sweet shops went out of stock last evening asking residents to come next morning as early as 6 am. For youngsters, sweets were not the right choice and they picked up boxes of assorted chocolates and biscuits.
On the other hand, if the sister be younger, the brother blessed her and showered her with gifts. "My sister is younger to me. So I gave her packs of chocolates and cookies on this occasion. In return she applied teeka and offered me sweets," said Kartik, a student. However, as this festival marks the end to the five-day-long festivities, which start from Danteras, people in a large number throng market to purchase variety of gift items for their loved one's.
From jewellery to watches and sweets, for a fun-filled shopping extravaganza, the markets of Doon were beautifully decked up.
Apart from dry fruit packs and sweets, this season there were a variety of gift packs available in the market.
"For Bhai Dooj, I purchased Haldiram's ladoo, as the packing is attractive and is economical as compared to the increasing prices of sweets in the market," said Neelima, a resident. Interestingly, with the passage of time as new gift items are attracting buyers. Bhai Dooj festival has no doubt been changing its form.
Over the years, the usage of e-mails, e-greetings, mobile phones, chocolates and beverage hampers are becoming popular and particularly benefiting those who are staying in far-off lands. But the basic significance of Bhai Dooj and the feeling and emotion behind celebrating this wonderful festival is still the same revealing and rejuvenating the eternal love of brother and sister.
