BJP striving to make Jammu bandh successful
Once again, protest demonstrations greet 'Darbaris' on first day
11/7/2010 11:12:53 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 7: Although paradoxical, yet for the last few years it has become a sort of ritual that the Darbar re-opens in the winter capital city amid protests, dharnas and demonstrations by different political and non-political organizations over one issue or the other.
With the highest seat of power recommences its functioning here tomorrow for the next six months, it is once again welcomed by a bandh call given by BJP, the main opposition party here and supported by many other organisations, for the cause of Jammu and Dogras.
This year the added dimension to the bandh call however, remains the controversial statements of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah related to Accession and later followed by his utterances in support of talks with POK militants, over which the supporters of bandh are all set to spit venom against the coalition government.
Though organising protest demonstrations and giving call for bandh on the first day of opening the offices in the winter capital has almost become synonymous with BJP but this year it assumes a little different dimension, if not significance over its focus on Omar Abdullah's utterances in particular, something which BJP is trying to hardsell to evoke full response for tomorrow's bandh. Though Jammu Bar Association and few other lesser known political organisations have also given call for Jammu bandh tomorrow separately, BJP , it is reliably learnt is mainly harping on the support of Chamber of Commerce , transporters and business community of Jammu to make the bandh effective and a complete success.
Apart from its marathon round of meetings of almost all the constituencies in Jammu city in particular, the BJP local leadership has been seriously engaged in meetings with those matter in making the bandh call successful.
They have in fact been able to garner the support of Chamber, the latter having almost agreed to support and the efforts were being made to convince transporters as well. To what extent BJP is able to garner support of all concerned and evoke an overwhelming response from the masses and public remains to be seen but for now, it is all set to make a 'resounding' presence on the roads, mainly near Civil Secretariat with shouts of slogans against Chief Minister.
Even as the government, apprehending such trouble around the Civil Secretariat has much earlier imposed prohibitory orders with a purpose to check protest demonstrations, BJP it has been learnt may violate the orders, something which is likely to trigger arrests and action on similar lines. However, the general line of instruction amid a thorough preparing session with its BJYM activists and other cadres, is that bandh has to be peaceful. The 'catch line' of the slogans BJP and others are going to raise pitch over is to convey a message to the Chief Minister that 'he should learn to respect' the constitution as 'he is bound by his oath to honour' it.
While this remains an issue of nationality and patriotism which is going to touch upon the sentiments of people by protestors on roads, BJP has chosen to rake up the discrimination card, with thrust on the 2008 agitation, an issue which still remains unsettled for Jammu so far since the traders and transporters here suffered huge losses.
All concerned have yet to be given compensation even as an agreement remains signed by the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti and the then government at the helm. The BJP is ruing that while Kashmir continues to receive packages in series thereafter, Jammu has always has been deprived.
So far as the issue of CM's utterances on Accession is concerned J&K Panthers Party gave call of Jammu bandh next day to express its complete disagreement. Though BJP too was up in arms against the Omar's statement, it did not support the bandh call for some unknown reasons. It remains to be seen will BJP be able to evoke complete response, even as its gestures are overtly politics of rhetorics.
