11/8/2010 10:29:43 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, November 08: It was a proud moment for entire Jammu and Kashmir state when a Jammu-based girl Upasana Koul d/o Dr M.K Koul of Ajit Colony, Gole Gujral, Jammu got an opportunity to meet the US First Lady, Michelle Obama in the library ofMumbai University. Upasana was one amongst the selected 15 management students who met the US First Lady during her visit to Mumbai.
Upasana is a B.E. from G.C.E.T Jammu and is presently pursuing MBA from Sydenham Institute of Management Studies and Entrepreneurship Education, Mumbai.
Upasana was a part of the five member team Eco-Binders that won the competition MUNIJAN (Mumbai University New Initiative For Joint Action Now) organised by the Mumbai University.
The team briefed Michelle Obama about the idea of Eco Binding. She was also presented with the first EcoBinder notebook and a detail about the project. Impressed with the students' project, the first lady advised the students to take their idea to the global level. She asked the team to keep her posted regularly on the progress on the implementation of the project. The name of the contact person has been given to the University Vice- Chancellor. The project reminded her of her early days when she was involved with social work and had worked on many social issues. She said she could relate to it and had done similar projects after she graduated from Harvard Law School.
Eco binding was the winning idea mooted by the students of Sydenham Institute of Management Studies and Research and Entrepreneurship Education (SIMSREE), where students are encouraged to find ways to reduce the felling of trees and wastage of paper. The idea revolves around the assumption that every student uses a notebook and, after every semester, each notebook has unused pages which normally gets wasted. The proposal is to donate these blank pages to a centralised group. This idea among others is under consideration for implementation by a university-appointed committee.
