Sowing time ahead but farmers vying for seeds | Director Agriculture says seeds are in plenty | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 8: Yet to come out of the losses inflicted by hailstorm, the farming community in Jammu and its adjoining areas is faced with another problem which is pre-empting the chances of successful Rabi crop. The harvesting time of the paddy crop is on and the farmers are preparing themselves for the cultivation of the Rabi crop but there not enough seeds -neither in quantity nor in quality. Authorities in the Agriculture Department are making tall claims about sufficient supply of seeds but farmer have a different story of woes to narrate. Early Times reached to farmers of different agricultural areas of Jammu region such as R S Pura, Samba, Kathua, parts of Jammu district and Akhnoor and found them complaining that the Agriculture department is not providing sufficient quantity of seeds to them. While on the other hand in some places the seeds are indeed available but are being sold at high prices. Members of Kissan Union Samba complained that in Samba, there is scarcity of seeds in the area, and are being sold at more than Rs 20.50, which is quite higher than the prescribed rates. Whereas the areas of the R S Pura, Kathua and Akhnoor the seeds are not available in the market. Farmers of these areas alleged that due to the recent hailstorm they have faced many problems earlier as their crop was destroyed to large extent. The farming community needed proper compensation to cope up the losses. They said that every year they start growing their crops in the onset of November. Much of their time has been wasted because of hailstorm and now the unavailability or the high rates of the seeds the cultivation of the crop would be delayed this year. They further said that they are totally dependent on the seasonal crops for their survival and they work round the year in fields with the hope that the produce would yield good return. Refuting the allegations of the farmers, Director Agriculture Department Jammu, Ajay Khajuria said that the seeds of Rabi crops were available in the market in sufficient quantity. He also said that if retailer found selling seeds on high rates then the prescribed rates by the department, the strict action would be initiative against them. He further said that the prescribed rate decided by the government department for the said seeds are Rs 17.50 per kilogram.
