Jammuites and Pandits are plagued by mushroom growth of unions
11/8/2010 10:35:05 PM
It is usually said that in distress people unite. But this adage does not seem to fit in the scheme of things in the Jammu region, including the internally displaced people from the Kashmir valley. It is so because Jammu has presented a picture of unprecedented mushroom growth of political, religious and social organisations. You cannot count these political parties on your finger tips because their number is quite large.Yes,there are scores of political parties in the Kashmir valley but after the formation of the All Party Hurriyat Conference these multi-coloured political groups came under the umbrella of the Hurriyat Conference.Even after differences cropped up among various factions of the separatist organisations but most of them remained under the amalgam headed by Molvi Umar Farooq and others remained under the umbrella of the hardliners led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani. And if one takes into account political groups that have come out of the umbrella of
either of the two factions of the Hurriyat Conference their number can be counted on the finger tips. It is the JKLF faction led by Mohd.Yusuf Mailk,Democratic Freedom party headd by Shabir Ahmed Shah and Peoples'Conference led by Sajjad Lone. They try to exist in isolation of one another. As far as the mainstream political parties are concerned Kashmir can claim to have small groups of people who represent the BJP,the Panthers Party,CPIM ,CPI and the BSP.The rest of the space has been occupied by the National Conference, the PDP and the Congress.Against this the political scenario in Jammu is complex and confusing. You have the party offices of all the politial parties, including the Congress,BJP,the Panthers,PDP,National Conference,RJD,SP,VHP,number of factions of the BSP,Jammu state Morcha,RSS,NCP,CPI,CPIM,ANC and half a dozen of youth wings of a these political groups.Even though their base is weak a number of separatists, including APHC,Democratic
Freedom Party, have set up their offices in Jammu.Lack of unity among major political parties is said to be responsible for the successive state Government's plan on discriminating people of the region against those in the Kashmir valley.Again lack of unity and absence of an urge to bring political groups of varied hues under one umbrella have deprived Jammu of a powerful leadership that could dictate terms to the Government. The agitation against revocation of the order under which land was diverted to the Amarnath Shrine Board in 2008 had thrown up a platform, christened as Sangarsh Samiti, on which number of political groups roared like one voice. The unprecedented unity demonsrated by the political, social and religious organisations had forced the Government to withdraw the revocation of land diversion order. But within less than one year the Sangarsh Samiti became a thing of history when some of its leaders wanted to contest the Assembly election
wwhich the BJP had opposed.Whatever may have been the reason or reasons for lack of unity among political groups in Jammu the people in the region have been neglected in all spheres of development and political activities. The Jammuites have a meagre share in the state servics,in the devoluion of funds for development projects and for different departments when compared to the Kashmir valley.Even if their ideologies are different but majority of political groups in Kashmir are seen joining hands while clamouring against any injustice or while raising one demand after the other. It is because of lack of unity that never in the history of Jammu, during the last 20 years, barring the agitation for restoration of land to Amarnath Shrine Board, calls for shutdown and bandhs, given by different parties on different occasions, have not received total response from the people. And those who try to sabotage the unity moves need to look towards Kashmir where the calls
for shutdowns and protest rallies, during the last five months, have evoked total response from the people.Wonder of the wonders the miniscule Kashmiri Pandits have more organisations and unions than any other communityy in the world. The result is lack of effective leadership that can shake the roots of the state and central Governments.Their voices are unheard.Their wails are ignored. They are unwept.Even those who deserve are unsung. It is all because of mushroom growth of organisations.Soon after the migration Panun Kashmir had emerged as the most poweful voice of the displaced people but it got split in three factions resembling a shipwreck that has no other alternative but to sink. You have scores of unions in Jammu,Delhi and oher states, voicing different voices though their woes are same. And if the Pandits or the Jammuites want that the level of their discrimination should end they need to forge unity or the one existing political groups need to come under one umbrella.
