Is corporal Punishment only remedy of all the ills. | | Khushwant S Ranial. | 11/8/2010 10:36:17 PM |
| Every now and then , we come across the news of excesses committed by the teachers on their wards in their own respective classes to improve the calibre and extract more from the potential of the children. But unfortunately this type of exercise to get best out of the children seems not at all encouraging and praiseworthy one .Rather ,it shows that the educator has lost all the relevant tools and legitimate means to win over the confidence of the educed to participate in the educator-pupil relationship. The teacher resorts to such means only when he feels deprived of all the sources available to his own genius to make the student learn and respond to the call of the teacher. But this is in fact ,one of the ugliest means to tackle an issue which could otherwise be taken to the logical conclusions through more adoption of the creative means and modern methodologies. But in this age of short cut success rate achievement ,teacher feels himself at ease by putting strain on the minds of the children by instilling the sense of fear , threat and terror instead of drawing creative means to judge the level of the intellect ,ability ,taste and temperament of the student . Such an endeavour rather looks boring to the teacher . Modern teacher feels hesitant in bringing down his own stature to the level of the student at hand. This formulae instead of doing the wonders ,lowers down the interest of the children and a ward starts detesting the studies and rushes towards outside the classroom to escape the wrath of the teacher .Every school going children has an ego and self respect among his peer group and he in no manner wants his image be tarnished or ego be hurt or status be humiliated ever before his own play group at least so that he may not become merely a laughing stock. But the reality is that the teacher forgets his own era through which he himself had tread through a few decades ago and thinks quite above the normal standard .Generally, teacher commits mistakes by equating one’s own image with that of the children expecting the student to be at par with the wisdom of the teacher where as in no way it could be feasible and rational. The aged old dictum ‘Spare the rod ,and spoil the child’ holds no concrete relevance in the present date. In simple words ,it is always depth of our torment that gives birth to our protest and we go to the extent of thrashing ,slapping, caning striping before the classmates ,asking to make cock like posture or sit on the back of the student before the crowded class ,accusing, paying no rapt attention to the voice of the children ,interrupting them over and again and forcing them to abide by our biased restrictions and putting their ego at stake for quenching our own thirst whereas this policy does not serve the purpose and rather affect the morale of the children and whatever insight , a student holds by the virtue of gifted nature is either suppressed or lost for ever due to constant snubbing .All such type of shabby treatment amounts to the human rights violation. Remember a child is very sensitive ,tender and soft and takes the whole pain without expressing his own feelings. Child is the father of the nation. And when we will be burying the interests and passions of the students , it is absolutely true that expected father of the nation will crop with the hazy vision and short sighted thinking prowess and squeezed imagination. Too expect miracles from such a class of the bunched strength will be merely a bigger mistake. No student is ever willing to surrender as youthfulness of the bubbling individual does not resist the temptation of retrying over and again .But his energy is not directed in the right direction whereas lack of a teacher’s foresightedness definitely becomes the root cause behind the emanation of the whole mess in distancing the relation. Despite all type of the time constraints , a teacher must treat the problem of the student very holistically and deeply and never superficially. This will help the teacher to comprehend his student very minutely and propose medicinal treatment accordingly. Even the research work conducted by the CRC [The convention on the children rights] and its monitoring body in their research papers published in the year 2000 and 2004 reminded that India should forcibly stop the corporal punishment as a solution to meet the need of the hour. The National commission for protecting the child’s rights, the education department of the Human resources development and UNICEF have too shown concern over the corporal punishment as a technique to extract more from the individual capacity of the student in the class in last four years. They have advocated for the absolving the corporal punishment keeping in view the different mental level of the students in the same class. They have suggested for the encouragement policy than shunning the student out of the class on the basis of their calibre .Positive disciplining is the best mode to achieve targets but that demands personal contribution of the teacher .The concept of the corporal punishment does not confine to the classroom but its influence can be felt at homes where our ill parenting attitude does harm the children who are bit naughty and over energetic and does not sit for the minutes together what to speak of the hours. Since we are always too much occupied in our own works or over loaded with the hectic schedule and get barely ample time to meet the requirement of the children ,we generally get irritated over his undue harassment and to keep is demands shut for a while ,we resort to easiest means of rebuking , repriminding ,or even slapping without lending him the ear at all. Many times we hear that the sufferer attempts to commit suicide as he fails to bear the onslaught of the hostile environment created by the teacher and the parents at home. Generally such type of punishment leads to fear ,aggression ,behavioural changes like thumb sucking ,nail biting ,stuttering ,stammering , regressive behaviour ,lack co confidence and self esteem ,constant complain of headache and bodily aches and mild fever etc. These all are the signs of shaken baby syndrome ,where the child is un interruptedly crossed at his every action and the child loses even his sound sleep and thus leading to the undesired growth of the mental ailment etc. In gist ,corporal punishment must be stopped and eradicated at all the cost .If after attaining the independence and adhering to modern tools of education ,we fail to win over the confidence of the student ,there is no doubt that we as the teacher and parents need educational therapy rather than the young siblings at the both the fronts i.e, school and at home. There should be a regular interaction between the parents and teachers and definitely such an approach will definitely carve a sound solution rather beating a child to mum his needs and innate feelings .We the seniors need to evolve a mechanism to breed our younger than expecting from the young ones to feed us with the readymade solutions for their problems .Here lies the remedy than searching the remedy through the use of the punitive measures.
