Taj asks engineers to implement JK WRRM Act

JAMMU, NOVEMBER 09- Minister for PHE Taj-Mohi-ud-Din asked the Chief Engineers to start the implementation of Jammu and Kashmir Water Resources Regulation and Management Act and issue notices to NHPC authorities for registering their units under its provision.
Minister said this while chairing the meeting of officers of PHE, Irrigation, Flood Control and Ravi Tawi Irrigation departments at Civil Secretariat, here this morning. Principal Secretary, PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Ashok Angurana, Special Secretary, PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Showkat Ahmed Zargar, Chief Engineer, PHE. Dalip Bakshi, Chief Engineer of Irrigation and Flood control, Jammu, B. R Dogra, Chief Engineer RTIC Ashwini Sharma and Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control, Kashmir, Nazib Ahmed were present in the meeting.
Interacting with the engineers, Taj said that on the implementation of Jammu and Kashmir Water Resources Regulation and Management Act No. 21 of 2010, the Government is expected to generate revenue worth Rs. 850 crore per year. He said that the department will also avail the benefits from the usage of water for drinking purposes, irrigation, drainage, generation of electricity or extraction of bed material from any water source, navigation or any other direct or indirect usage.
He asked the authorities to post engineers in every power house and take measures to log the water for usage. He said that coalition Government is committed to provide adequate drinking water to the people in every nook and corner of the State by digging deep drill tube wells, hand pumps besides through canals and springs. He asked them to direct the field staff to remain present in their jurisdictions and resolve the drinking water related issues of the people without any delay.
To deal with water scarcity in the remote and far-off areas, he said that instructions have been issued to concerned departments to dig hand pumps in rural as well as urban areas to meet the requirement of drinking water. He said that the coalition Government was endeavoring hard to provide adequate irrigation facilities to the farmers for enabling them to cope up with the long dry spells being experienced in the state.
